tbh I became less fond of my very long, one-length hair once I realized I was giving Big Edie Bouvier Beale vibes during this, my Grey Gardens-ing era.
My sincerest apologies for this appearance of my nose and mouth as well as potential eye contact.
The shorter layers are much easier to wrangle around the head straps and elasto halo.
After spending most of 2022–24 seeing how long I could grow out my silver hair and trying to make it shiny and smooth, I've been slowly trying to be brave enough to add layers, with varying success. This is the best haircut I've given myself in the 13-14 years I've been cutting my own hair.
A cute respirator >>>>>> acute infection
This is me now.
“it’s the lowest levels since the early days of the pandemic. we should be celebrating”
“levels are rising in some places but there’s no reason to panic”
“ok there’s a wave but it’s still smaller than most of the previous waves”
“these data estimates are crazy and people who trust this data are fearmongers”
Framing other Covid-conscious people as “fearful exaggerators” or “addicted to Covid apprehension” to position oneself as the sensible voice. Cool cool cool.
Over the last couple years, I’ve been experimenting with something wolfcut-adjacent to get layers to go around the respirator halo straps (I am aware of the various opinions about respirator straps and hairdos, thank you). Today, I have gone for a bolder, shorter layered cut. Here’s hoping it’s messy in a pleasant way and grows out nicely.
I’ve been cutting my own hair since 2013 and I think I’ve finally figured it out.
Sense — what was it? Was it ever common? Will anyone start making it again?
Given that The People will not wear a simple air-filtering accessory on their faces to prevent repeated infections with the pandemic virus, there’s not much hope than anyone has the temerity to meet the moment. Else they might’ve met any of the previous moments that led to this moment.
Whatever happens in the US tomorrow, the chief tantrum-haver is going to continue to throw tantrums and intensify problems until there are enough in opposition with the will to actually stop the tantrum-having criminal. If the named opposition simply take their ringside seats and use the moment as more fundraising opportunities, then The People need to have the will to do more than stand around on nice days holding quippy signs.
The temptation is there to speculate about whether this will be a terrible Omicron-level wave or consistently chonky wave. Which way will the line go?
The line is people. We know where we are in the calendar year and we know what people tend to do over the next two months (hint: gather indoors for obligatory events that generally encourage putting stuff into mouths and making noises also with mouths).
Your friendly minimizers are probably not okay right now seeing the graph that shows how we went from "omg stop panicking, this is the lowest level of Covid in several years, we should be celebrating actually" to the worst October/November of Covid ever.
Projects and chores and projects with chores and too many projects turn out to be chores
What is time but a measurement of punishment and regret
"Risk analysis and mitigation is not rooted in fear. It is rooted in the ability to understand the variables of a changed environment and adapt to them. That is to say, risk analysis and mitigation is based in facing reality head-on. This is a rare and valuable skill."

My instance already long took away the “search your own toots library” function, so it’s a hassle to continue long-running threads.
I detest all the ways to Mastodon on desktop. Which is probably good to finally wean me off socials.
