So...for this non-tech person, what's the next best alternative to LibreOffice for documents, presentation slides, and spreadsheets?

When I was catching the bus home from town today a boy got on but found his bus card had no credit left. He didn’t have any cash. The driver was very uncompromising - “no fare, no ride”.

Happily a woman behind him paid his fare because the driver would have left him there, 15k from home 🫤

This shouldn’t happen and of course it wouldn’t if children travelled free. They definitely should IMHO.

@hacks4pancakes It's funny to me that the Turing Test turned out to be the lowest bar imaginable.

This is a business-destroying post, and the writer genuinely appears to have no idea what they've just done

I despise the lack of integrity coming out of the tech industry because of AI. I'm starting to fall away from any kind of digital tech interest. I'm ending subscriptions and using secondhand devices. I probably won't buy anything new if I can help it.

Linux going over to AI has stopped me in my tracks. I've been happily coding this and that my whole life. Now, it's of no interest. I don't want suggestions anymore.

I won't ever recommend anything ever again. I somewhat despise anyone talking about new tech, instantly. I hope I don't need anything in the future. Hopefully everything has a lower rung I can utilise as a hack to avoid the current cutting edge of the Tech industry.

Honestly this should be on the front page of every media outlet. As far as I can tell only The Greens have picked up on it on so far. It is a complete disgrace that we have a tax system that the wealthy can manipulate in such a fashion.

"A research report, endorsed by globally renowned French economist Thomas Piketty, released today [30 October 2026] shows that between 2021 and 2024 the very wealthy* in New Zealand paid an 8.1% effective tax rate, less than half the rate of the median-wealth adult of 17.4%."

* Defined as the 311 wealthiest families.

On Sunday, Mozilla put out an ad campaign asking you to come back to Firefox and escape corporate tracking. Meanwhile, Mozilla engineers are co-writing an on-by-default, no-consent ad tracking standard for browsers at the W3C. With Meta.

Come back to Firefox, they said. Meta never left.

Interesting analysis of Lula's belatedly successful election strategy.

Would it be too mean to compare the estimated savings from COP31's website being in dark mode to the rising emissions of all the petrotech hyperscalers that will be attending COP31 to greenwash AI

This hurts, because, it's true: "Silicon Valley will spend millions developing a glove that translates sign language into speech (badly), but they won't spend ten minutes adding Alt-Text to their images. They will build a headset that describes the room to me (poorly), but they won't use semantic HTML headings so I can actually navigate a webpage."

Celebrate Lula's win by telling Mark Zuckerberg to fuck off. #Brazil

Thank f*ck!

It is 222 A.D. You are the transgender Empress Elagabalus, "call me not a man for I am a woman". Transitioning is new and experimental.

It is 1776. You are "Public Universal Friend", a transmasculine nonbinary Quaker. Transitioning is new and experimental.

It is 1906. You are Karl M. Baer, a trans man undergoing sex reassignment. Transitioning is new and experimental.

It is 1930. You are Lili Elbe. Transitioning is new and experimental. (to be fair you did get a uterus transplant.)

It is 1966. You are in Compton's Cafeteria with a bunch of other trans people when the owners call the cops to throw you all out. You riot. Transitioning is new and experimental.

It is 1969. You are Marsha "pay it no mind" Johnson. You are in a mob-run gay bar when the cops attack. You throw a brick. There is a bit of a scuffle. Transitioning is new and experimental.

It is 2026. You are a transgender adult or child listening to the NYT and British Guardian claim this is the first generation anyone has tried transitioning in. Transitioning is new and experimental.

I’ve spent enough time with Ravens to know they’re not always in the mood. But every once in awhile—maybe it’s part of their PR campaign for the Halloween season, or maybe they just finished eating or preening—they’ll humor me and stick around for a moment where they seem just as curious as I am. A genuine “who’s watching who” scenario when I suddenly realize I’ve forgotten to breathe.
