If you live in the US and you're worried that there's no point in voting, you got to ask yourself why they're trying so hard to stop people from doing it.
And then go out and vote!

The most depressing thing about the current bubble is that so many of the flagship ‘look how amazing AI is!’ things are things where LLMs are a pretty poor fit and other techniques work much better, but the baseline for comparison uses well under 10% of the compute, often under 1%. If you threw 10% of the memory and processor capacity at the non-LLM approach, it would work much better than the LLM approach. Yet it’s easy for OpenAI or Anthropic to burn $10M on a tech demo and incredibly hard to get anyone to spend $1M on a good solution to the same problem.
As long as money is flowing to these companies, they’re starving interesting research of resources because there’s no incentive to build efficient systems when a company is willing to set fire to investors’ money to run the horribly inefficient version for you.

My youngest (18) and their friend tonight
all homemade, very proud.
Another record profit for Shell (and other oil companies). This is a slightly adapted version of a cartoon I did in 2022.
A number of people have pointed this out in my timeline over the last months but I wanted to reiterate:
the defence - 'they were just a few bad apples', misses the actual point of the aphorism:
a few bad apples in a barrel, actually corrupts the entire barrel, unless removed (very)( quickly.
users of the phrase may defend that use by saying they acted quickly to avoid the corruption; but as they never really do, the original use - the corrupting effect *of* the bad apples, stands!
Sam Altman said it's "quite terrible to have everybody have a bunch of the world's limited supply" of DRAM sitting in personal computers.
You know what Sam? I think that it's quite terrible to have all the billionaires have a bunch of the world's money sitting around in their personal bank accounts unused when there are people living on the streets and children going hungry.
And also, as always: Go fuck yourself Sam Altman.
So @protonprivacy has plunged themselves into a crisis now over AI obsession and mistreating staff. Customers are leaving.
The CEO has popped up on Reddit to try to reassure customers.. who are mass downvoting his replies.
Here's Proton's AI manifesto in full, leaked. It's proper brainrot management stuff.

And people I'm doing some things with are complaining that they can't keep track of conversation threads on Gmail......
Well...
1) Switch from gmail,
2) Do email in a mail client
3) If you must use it, do gmail in a mail client*,
4) Use filters and folders
5) Turn message threading on and off as needed.
6) Use and encourage subject line discipline.

Erm? The U.S. #Army recently conducted its first large-scale mass battlefield grave training exercise since the Korean War as part of Operation Dragon Covenant at Fort Bragg, North Carolina. This drill, involving the 3rd Corps Sustainment Command and the 20th Engineer Brigade, tested the ability to dig and fill temporary interment trenches using D6 bulldozers while preserving remains for future identification and repatriation.
The Army estimates that an engineer company with eight bulldozers and four excavators could bury up to 2,400 bodies in 24 hours.
I find this a tad disconcerting.

My teen has dressed as a Doctor Who character, from the episode "World enough and time". He hooked up a keyboard to a cellphone, so he can make it say " pain" repeatedly.

We are days away from a vital election, and I see too few of you willing to share accurate information to overcome the growing right-wing takeover of news media.
A growing cohort of tech oligarchs and conservative billionaires is rapidly consolidating control over major American media companies, steering traditional news institutions toward right-leaning and business-friendly perspectives. 3/5
Republicans are trying to hide the many ways they intend to harm you and help corporations until after the midterms. New federal rules by U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) and the FDA will severely restrict or block Americans from importing cheaper personal-use prescription drugs by mail from Canada and other international sources. While originally scheduled for October 22, 2026, CBP postponed the full enforcement and implementation date to January 20, 2027. 1/5
Omg querying is such a crazy process.
