Grapevines grown under solar panels produce bigger, healthier grapes.
Researchers from the University of Bari tested the approach on a Primitivo (Zinfandel) vineyard in Italy’s hot, sunny Puglia region.
*The partially shaded vines grew shoots more than twice as long as vines in full sun, and their grape bunches were nearly three times heavier at harvest.*
The shaded grapes also had lower sugar and more beneficial compounds like polyphenols, because the vines spent less energy fighting heat stress.
The setup cuts watering needs while generating clean energy at the same time.
The added humidity under the panels even helps cool them, modestly boosting their power output.
Researchers caution results will vary by region and grape variety, but in hot, dry climates it looks like a win on every front.
