Not sure why I've not fiddled with them before but #ESP32 devices running #ESPHome are lots of fun to play with. Only downside: I only ordered three of them.

The embracing of LLMs by a lot of people in the Home Assistant community surprises me. Why go to the effort of having a local home automation system and then give an LLM unfettered access to your installation?

Not for me, thanks.

#pkgsrc on macOS continues to improve - I did a full rebuild of all of my packages (many with custom options) from the -current branch last week and had only 2-3 failures out of 500+ packages. Some packages that failed to build for me previously (eg, lang/ghc910) now build without issue. Very impressed.

For those disappointed by the recent #Neovim goings-on and looking for an alternative, you can do worse than switch to Doom #Emacs. Great OOTB user experience, vi key bindings enabled by default and they have a clear policy on LLM contributions (see https://github.com/doomemacs/core)

Today's PSA: #XFS v4 filesystems are not supported by #Debian kernel packages 6.18.5 and later so older systems may run into issues. I have a created-in-2011 snowflake VM running -testing that was bitten by this a few months back.

For users using stable this will only be an issue with the upgrade to forky (Debian 14), but it's a bit nasty.

See: https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=1126710

Very strange. One of my #Proxmox cluster nodes managed to temporarily break itself because the ownership of `/var/log/pveproxy/access.log` was changed to root:root after a reboot. Easy to fix, but strange.

Also not sure why the node rebooted, could be a watchdog timeout, perhaps caused by one of the NICs being an Intel I219. I've not seen any issues with that NIC on any of the nodes (all are the same hardware) so offloading is still enabled.

I've never used #OpenBSD's rdomain(4) feature in anger before but I just configured it to ensure all traffic from a specific VLAN exits via a WireGuard tunnel. It's a really elegant solution and foolproof for those cases where you don't ever want traffic exiting via any other route (eg, if the tunnel interface is destroyed).

Not the same as my setup but @solene has a useful guide - https://dataswamp.org/~solene/2021-10-09-openbsd-wireguard-exit.html

I've always thought IBM PS/2 towers (eg the model 95) looked amazing (that red power switch!). Sadly they're not cheap - https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/178153320953

I used freebsd-rustdate last night for the first time instead of freebsd-update(8) and the speed improvement was very impressive, even on a relatively old system (ThinkPad X201, first generation i5, SATA SSD). This was moving from 14.2-RELEASE to 14.3-RELEASE and the upgrade went perfectly. Had a few minor issues with package updates but those were user issue.
