I admire the ambition….but I would take some convincing.

Nick Cave - Into my arms

I was first aware of Nick Cave as the manic, king-goth singer of the Birthday Party, and I used to see him occasionally at gigs and stuff, looking very moody and stern. I saw him a few years back in Bournemouth. It was his 60th, and the audience spontaneously sang Happy Birthday to him.

It was a sweet moment

This is the rhythm that Adam and the Ants "borrowed". I was in the smallish crowd here, and it was awesome in all the senses of that word. I've not yet spotted myself in the video

Umeko Ando - Upopo Sanke

I've never known much about it, but the Bandcamp writeup tells me:

"Upopo Sanke" means "Let's sing a song" in the Ainu language. Umeko Ando (1932-2004) was one of the best-known artists of the Ainu, an indigenous, long-oppressed community in northern Japan. She sings their traditional songs with Oki Kano on the tonkori harp, who also recorded the album. They are joined by members of the vocal group Marewrew, as well as Ainu percussionists, a string player and a male vocalist who provides rhythmic shouts and throat singing."

For #JukeboxFridayNight on 2 October 2026 theme suggested last week was World Music for music that does not follow "North American or British pop and folk traditions" and including ethnic fusion and worldbeat, world fusion and global fusion' 🌍️ 🌏️ 🌐

The term World Music is problematic and othering though so a better alternative could be A Wider World.

Songs and music to centre non English heritage music from all round the world. Any objections or alternative suggestions? Please reply by 4.50pm NZDT or in next 5 minutes

Noting that WOMAD will return to Aotearoa New Zealand in 2027

Recognizing that some musicians and curators of music dislike the term "world music". To critics, "world music" is a parochial, catch-all marketing term for non-Western music of all genres.

"Even within the 'world music' community, nobody likes the term 'world music'. It carries loaded issues, from cultural colonialism to questions about what's 'authentic' and what isn't (and who might get to police such inquiries), and forces an incredible array of styles that don't have anything in common under the label of 'exotic Other.' In many people's imaginations, 'world music' means a kind of fairly hippy-ish, worldbeat fusion. It's a problematic, horrible term that satisfies absolutely no one."

The term "world music" (or "global," "international," and the like) is a Western musical category encompassing many different styles of music from other parts of the globe. It includes many forms of music that Westerners consider ethnic, indigenous music, folk music, neotraditional music, and ethnofusion music.

World music is defined in opposition, and relative, to Western popular music and Western art music. In market context, "ethnic" music is synthetically defined by a radius that extends from a Western center.

It’s the first day since around April that I’ve been able to go out whenever I want without sunscreen. Woohoo!

If the people in a BBC Radio 4 comedy have regional accents, then it will probably funny. If they don’t, then it probably won’t.

Note 1: in this context, ‘London’ counts as a regional accent
Note 2: YMMV

I didn’t watch the proper 70 UP but I very much enjoyed this 1965 off-shoot. Hats were clearly very much a thing for older women at the time.
