It may be 'just a facade' ...but its an iconic one, with some great memories.

2026 is like; "Today we're announcing that the Don't Eat Babies Foundation is partnering with EatBabies.com to promote safe and healthy ways to eat babies."

Yesterday I went to the University of Glasgow to speak at their physics colloquium. Afterward my host took me to the Hunterian Museum. This has a big exhibit on Kelvin's electromechanical gadgets - but also one on the Antonine wall.

I hadn't heard of that wall! 160 kilometers north of Hadrian's more famous wall, it stretches 60 kilometers from a bit north of Glasgow to a spot on the Firth of Forth west of Edinburgh. Unlike Hadrian's wall, it's not made of stone, so there's not so much to see. It was made of turf on a stone foundation, sometimes with a wide ditch on the north side.

The Romans started building it two decades after Hadrian's wall. But only two decades after that, it was abandoned! The Roman legions withdrew to Hadrian's Wall in 162. After a series of attacks in 197, the emperor Septimius Severus arrived in Scotland in 208 to fight off the local tribes and fix up Hadrian's wall. But he didn't do anything about the Antonine wall.

So, wild savages like me formed border states in this area, which is now called The Old North. All of these states except the Kingdom of Strathclyde were gradually subsumed by Anglo-Saxons, Scots and Picts by about 800. The last to survive, Strathclyde, was incorporated into the Kingdom of Scotland in the 11th century. But the Old North still echos through history in the tales of Welsh poets.

I'm want to do a Saw thing but instead of knives and chains I just force devs to read their own commit messages aloud and explain what they mean.

Using _more_ magic to hush up a magical crime rarely ends well.

When you have adequate English skills and top tier comeback skills

I am making a collection of sweary phrases for a grumpy but colourful art project.

The whole collection to date is here:
https://eclectech.co.uk/ffs

I'm after things you might say when shouting in angry frustration at a news headline (where an exasperated "for fuck's sake" is common in English).

The options that have been sent to me for Gaelic are in the poll below. If you have a preference for which should join the collection please vote.

If this has landed in your timeline & you don't know what I'm talking about, the original thread about the project is here

Doodling has paid off. I've done a few each week and they're getting cleaner, so now the wiki on Fenestra has some images.

When the troupe passed the scary dungeon-entrance sign (on their way out), they decided to mock the proprieter. The dungeon has one or more index cards per location, so I just handed them the card, and they drew directly onto it.

@Taskerland - that index card bit you mentioned works great. What was the source?

Dwarf fortress might be the most complex game I’ve ever played. So I jumped at the chance to work with mightymerch.store to make a 20th anniversary map poster. This one was beyond fun to draw. Just like my previous island map I used Gaea to design the 3d landscape from a sketched height-map and then drew all the underground fortress over that. #mapping #map #cartography #cross-section #dwarffortress

Git conflict --ours vs. --theirs:

I’m merging a branch. --ours is the branch I’m on, --theirs is the branch I’m merging. Makes sense.

I’m rebasing a branch. --ours is the branch I’m rebasing, --theirs is the branch I’m on. Wait.

I can make it make sense iff I’m rebasing someone else’s branch only so I can merge it with fast forward after.

I’m applying a stash. --ours is the branch I’m on, --theirs is the stash. Someone else’s stash? Fuck this shit. 🤬

I've not had much luck convincing my joints to move on this day, and I can't get my braces on cause swelling, but when looking for inspiration for inktober, I often turn towards medieval manuscripts, because the art in them is just bonkers. Despite it not being relevant, I did feel it necessary to share.

So, while tomorrow will include today and tomorrow's prompts, today instead I give you; a sultry sturgeon atop a jousting helmet. The middle ages were wild, if the illustrations are anything to go by.
