💡 If you looked at the last data analysis you conducted: Would you be able to retrace every step of your data processing to come back to the same results?
👥 We are excited to share that OSC members @susanneadler , @drfollowmario , Frauke Kreuter, Marko Sarstedt, @nicebread & @stfeuerriegel co-authored an article which was recently published in @Nature Human Behaviour, highlighting how computational reproducibility is crucial for the credibility of science. Computational reproductions can discover errors early on and prevent further spreading of computational errors into other papers and theoretical consensus. This secures the quality and efficiency of research and promotes trust in the scientific process and community.
❔ What can we do?
In the article, the authors list a number of recommendations for reproducible workflows, such as making data, code and documentation accessible and readable using the following method in research routines.
S -Script the full analysis
E - Encapsulate the environment
E - Explain code + data
D - Deposit materials persistently

RE: https://fediscience.org/@PLOSBiology/117406778107242047

🎉 We’re proud to highlight OSC member Johan Duchêne 's new comment published in @PLOSBiology ! The work advocates for stricter antibody validation processes to increase reproducibility in biomedical research.

The OSC Open Science Summer School 2026 is complete! Across two tracks and seven days, participants developed practical Open Science skills and explored how to effectively share these practices with others. Interested in exploring what we covered? Check out our Open Science track 1 training materials, including the public lecture recordings, here: https://osf.io/s9epn/overview, instructor training resources here: https://osf.io/ay8qk/overview, and all our self-paced tutorials here: https://www.osc.lmu.de/training/self-learning.html.

OSSS26 highlights:

🔓 Public lectures brought together experts to explore research credibility, Open Access, open data, readable code, research repeatability, scientific workflows, and emerging challenges such as AI and the tension between openness, equity, and exploitation.
💻 Hands-on workshops gave participants practical experience with R, FAIR data management, preregistration, simulations, Git & GitHub, Quarto, reproducible R environments, and code and data publishing, with opportunities to apply these skills to their own research.
👩‍🏫 In collaboration with PROFiL and @FORRT the instructor training focused not only on Open Science knowledge, but also on how to effectively share it. Participants explored didactics, supportive learning environments, event planning, activation methods, leadership, and navigating common teaching challenges in Open Science before designing and receiving feedback on their own Open Science workshops.

A big thank you to all our participants, speakers, instructors, assistants, and collaborators! Special thanks to the OSC staff, including Prof. Dr. Felix Schönbrodt (@nicebread), Dr. @MalikaIhle, Dr. Sarah V., Dr. Sara Lil Middleton, Reema G., Pat Callahan, Florian Kohrt, and Elizabeth Waterfield, who made OSSS26 possible.

Collaboration and application were central throughout, with practical activities, discussions, networking, and tailored support helping participants connect what they learned to their own research and teaching. We look forward to reconnecting with participants in six months to hear how they have put what they learned into practice.

On Day 2, participants gained even more hands-on practice exploring leadership, navigating challenges as instructors, and designing their own Open Science learning experiences.

Here’s a recap of Day 2:

🌱 Dr. Sara Lil Middleton and Flavio Azevedo from @FORRT opened the day by exploring what it means to be a leader, drawing on participants’ own experiences to discuss important elements of effective leadership.
📝 Dr. Sara Lil M. then explored common challenges instructors and leaders may encounter, guiding participants as they reflected on their own experiences and identified areas where they may face similar challenges.
💡 Building on this, participants considered “What do we do?” and “What can we do?” when challenges arise. Working in groups, they discussed case studies, possible responses, and resources they could turn to for support in their own situations.
🛠️ Sara Lil and Dr. Sarah von Grebmer, joined by Dr. @MalikaIhle, continued with the Design Your Own Open Science Workshop. Participants built on their plans from Day 1 and used freely available materials from the OSC’s Train-the-Trainer programme to support their workshop development.
💬 Finally, participants presented their teaching plans to their peers and the OSC team, receiving feedback and discussing practical questions, concerns, and next steps.

Open Science is a collaborative effort, and supporting those who teach and advocate for it is an important part of growing the community. We’re happy to have played a part in supporting this group of instructors as they continue their Open Science journey.

Day 1 of Track 2 of the Open Science Summer School 2026 complete! This new track focuses specifically on instructors, exploring not only what we teach about Open Science, but also how we can create effective, engaging, and supportive learning experiences for others.

Here’s a recap of Day 1:

🎓 Dr. Sarah von Grebmer opened the track by exploring core didactic principles, laying the foundation for understanding learners and how this understanding can guide effective teaching.
📝 The focus then shifted to planning Open Science events, where Dr. Sarah V introduced evidence-based approaches and frameworks for effective planning of Open Research events. Participants also considered how these methods can be transferred to other learning experiences.
🌱 Dr. Sarah V then explored creating a supportive learning environment, highlighting how thoughtful learning environments can encourage participation, motivation, and meaningful learning in the context of Open Research.
⚡ Sophie Renard from PROFiL led an interactive session exploring short activation methods and how they can support attention, engagement, and learning processes in higher education and Open Science teaching at different points in the ARIPE model.
🛠️ Finally, Dr. Sarah V. and Dr. Sara Lil Middleton facilitated the Design Your Own Open Science Workshop: Part I. Participants had the opportunity to immediately apply what they had learned throughout the day by beginning to design their own Open Science teaching event and considering how they would execute it in practice.

Track 2 reflects an important value of the Open Science Center: not only sharing the knowledge and skills needed to practice Open Science, but also supporting those who want to share this knowledge with others. By supporting instructors, we contribute to a growing community that can continue strengthening Open Science practices.

Day 5 complete! 🎉 And with that, we close Track 1 of the Open Science Summer School 2026! Our final day began with an eye-opening public lecture by Dr. Danny Maupin on The Tension Between Equity and Exploitation. Recordings of all our public lectures from this week can be found here: https://osf.io/s9epn

Here’s a recap of Day 5:

⚖️ Dr. Danny Maupin explored the tension between making research data open and accessible and the potential for these resources to be exploited. Using examples from open datasets, publishing trends, and the rise of LLMs, he encouraged participants to think critically about unethical research practices and how we can preserve the benefits of Open Science while addressing these emerging challenges.
🛠️ Patrick Callahan, Dr. @MalikaIhle, Dr. Sarah von Grebmer, Laura Meier, Reema Gupta, Dr. Sara Lil Middleton, and Elizabeth Waterfield supported participants in breakout groups based on topics covered throughout the week. This gave participants an opportunity to receive more detailed guidance on incorporating Open Science practices into their own ongoing projects.
💬 Dr. @MalikaIhle and Dr. Sarah von Grebmer then led a Q&A session on becoming and staying involved in Open Science communities, answering questions about how participants can continue contributing to a community of researchers committed to open research practices.
🚀 Finally, Dr. Sarah von Grebmer led the “Where to go from here?” session, helping participants turn the knowledge and skills gained throughout the week into actionable and achievable next steps.

And that’s a wrap on Track 1! We look forward to seeing how everyone carries these practices into their future projects and continues contributing to a more open, transparent, and reproducible research community. Next week, we commence Track 2 for our instructor training program in collaboration with @FORRT and PROFiL
