My 2026 continues:
Mobile tyre replacement, wait a week for them to come, not even able to go to work or anything but tiny journies.
*ring ring* 'hi we only have 3 tyres sorry'
WTF.
Oh and of course, the new, glorious, satanic lundgren bridge pickup in the guitar is loose, because nothing can just go right for me this year :))
I know both are petty first-world problems but everything big and small has just gone wrong for me this year...
If you'd like to learn more about controlling Intel CPUs with Arduinos, you can watch my talk at VCF Midwest 2025.

It's kind of crazy that you can do this sort of thing without an FPGA. You really should use an FPGA, but hey.
Before and after a visit to the guitar tech!
very happy, now it is more evil
I am now very divorced [legally speaking: not quite, but in every other sense: yes]
More anti-ADHD crap in the press, it reminds me of living through covid and all the demonstrably, flatly false, crap people came out with.
Loss in faith in experts has really empowered the stupid.

Brilliant. I'm sure there'll be no consequences, never mind, nothing to see here!
The UK engages in mass surveillance on the assumption GCHQ and the police and govt are perfect custodians of your entire life online.
Also, imagine if you as an ordinary citizen lost secret material like this. Do you imagine there'd be the same level of shrug?
No, you'd have your life destroyed.
It's one set of rules for those with power and quite another for ordinary people.
It's Grindcore Friday!
BTW due to tyre debacle, here is how much the train costs for the journey to Cambridge + back, vs. ~£50 in petrol.
So ~2.5x the price for 1 person :)
And train takes 2 hours longer, likely involves a bunch of standing, and that's all assuming no cancellations/delays etc.
This country is a mess...
2026 summed up: ordered 4x all season tyres for car as it's slipping in the wet.
Wait all week for them to come fit them.
Call this morning 'we only got 3 of the 4 somebody in the warehouse must have taken one and not realised'.
Fucking unreal...

Ah, hell.
He was a truly class act. He'll always be my favorite Trek captain, despite some stiff competition.
My claude is beaten down. But fuck the machines really
EDIT: He replied well so I'll cut the spice.
<rant about AI spamming>
Engaging nicely with maintainers works, see :)
@ljs Someone shared this with me lol
Funny to see head from korn has essentially my guitar spec-wise (esp, evertune, 25.5", 7 string obv) and also does the highly advanced 'foam behind the nut so strings don't ring' technique :P
Tranquilo, tío, ¿pero qué coño?
this whole thing already happened with the 'AI did a C compiler in X days' crap.
It turned out - guess what - that it was fucking awful, buggy, slow and generated terrible code.
But certain people so so want this stuff to be true they don't stop and wait to see if it is.
Mask slipping.
People go wild with new stuff in computing, and often the mask slips a bit I notice.
Suits + normy types almost immediately start mocking programmers - 'ha ha you're not needed now ha ha' - because really they hate + resent us + want us to be 'useless', but have to begrudgingly accept us.
It's happened so many times, and every time they've been wrong, and nearly nobody seems to call them out for it...
And now with 'linux but in rust' and the barely concealed contempt for kernel devs comes rolling out.
Nobody seems to stop and think about:
a. schlopped code is universally terrible. Yes with frontier models. Yes I've done it for real and seen that.
b. AI hallucinates and the hallucinations start heavily compounding if the person 'directing' the AI has no fucking clue what they're doing.
c. Your OS is worthless if existing developers don't develop for it. Sorry. Enjoy if it's a toy, but in real life this is the truth.
As things stand, there's zero threat to linux. Sorry haters.
of course, as much as I think it's the right approach, it's fucking hard to do 🤣
Which I guess is where a lot of the work is right?
Since it's important for people to talk about this stuff:
I have lived with depression for all of my life, but in my 30's I experienced an unexpected remission.
It was replaced with anxiety moreso than depression, and that remission lasted for more than a decade.
However a series of extremely bad things that have happened to me since late last year, which would have hit anybody hard, seems to have brought it right back.
I am in treatment - both therapy and medication, which is the right way to deal with it.
But I am up and down and some days very very down.
I am learning that part of the healing process is to just keep doing things even when they feel pointless, or you are in pain, as weird as it feels to do.
Hiding from the depression only concedes power to it.
Metacognitive therapy* steps back and observes these things as patterns of thoughts, with the answer not being 'answering' them but to simply let them be.
Which I think is the right approach.
