The cockatoos are rolling in to greet the sun. They were a little early so I asked them if they'd like to help out. They saw no profit in that idea.

Okay, we need to find the title of a graphic novel, based on Youngest's childhood memories. Published prior to 2016ish, available in US libraries.

"Auburn/red haired female character, probably the main. A boy who lives in the woods who is friends with a bear. All three sleep in a cave together at some point. A lich monster, a stampede of horses towards the end. A grandmother figure." Any of these points could be off a little.

Can anyone help me find a copy of this book?

I've tried to find a new or used physical copy and, failing that, all the *other* avenues but it seems to be lost media. Any tips would be helpful!

retoots appreciated!

In 2008 I wrote a networking utility program for Linux. It's still maintained and used. Take the first letter of every sentence in its (rather long) man page and it spells "Never gonna give you up" etc etc. Nobody has ever mentioned it.

Colorado’s big wildlife overpass has cut animal collisions by 91%. Drivers used to hit roughly one deer a day on the stretch between Denver & Colorado Springs in migration season. Since the 61-metre-wide bridge, 5 underpasses & fencing opened last December, elk, bears and leopard frogs have used them, and pronghorn have crossed the interstate for the first time in decades. I was laid off today. First time I've dealt with something like this. Not much else to say at this stage.

If anyone has meteorology work of any kind, please let me know. I'm pretty tied down to Hermiston for now, but open to some forms of hybrid work in the Pacific Northwest.

I'm very glad I was home from my ride when this came through. There was only smaller hail, but a lot of it.

Folks, please share the link for our Fediverse Multimedia Grants.

We have funding for creators to make podcasts, artist's portfolios, webcomics, music stores, video streams, or brand new kinds of channels here. And we pay developers to help them be successful.

Our deadline is Wed 4 Nov 2026. It only takes a few minutes to apply.

ArchiveOfOurOwn (AKA AO3, run by the Organization for Transformative Works (OTW)) has been down for a few days due to a security incident. In the wake of that security incident, a site called AO3.life has cropped up. At some point, they scraped what appears to be most (if not all ... I've got no way to check that myself) of the fics on AO3 including ones that were only available to logged-in users.

In addition to providing these fics (some of which were specifically not intended for broader consumption) on their site, they're trying to get readers to pay for audio editions of the stories.

They have some dodgy and technically impossible steps if you are an AO3 author and want to take your fics down.

OTW is aware and is taking legal action but they warn that the legal system is slow. They advise that you do not attempt to use AO3.life's requested method since it may expose you to additional dangers regarding your private information.

Good morning, happy Monday! Please enjoy this year’s crop of pumpkins

I've basically been having the rug pulled out from under me for me entire career.

I was a freshly minted audio engineer recording mostly Jazz cats in the greater Boston area right as Spotify was tearing the bottom out of the music industry.

I lucked into a lateral shift doing accessibility development and interactive media stuff at the Smithsonian, easily the best and most fun job I've ever had, with incredible colleagues and a boss I would follow through the gates of hell if they needed me to, but they never, ever would.

The funding dropped out of that too, for complex reasons I imagine you can figure out.

By then I had enough coding and design chops to score a job as a full time game programmer at a little startup game studio, which was great for a while until we needed finishing funds right as the beginning of the current industry collapse was starting.

So this whole LLM clusterfuck isn't like, new to me. This is the third time I've been in an industry as its been torn clean in half.

Doesn't make it any less infuriating though.

For the last two years I've been working on my own project, and I'll get it on Steam eventually, but the goal has really been to show what I can do by myself from scratch, with no AI anything, because I can.

But if you need someone with solid programming fundamentals, good game architecture knowledge, deep audio skills, and knowledge (if not skill) in animation, 3d modelling, shaders, UI design, etc, I am available and looking for opportunities.

Fresh from my brain

These two stunning forest floor giants are separated by about 80 million years of evolutionary isolation and roughly 1,500 miles of ocean (AKA the Tasman Sea).

For scale, this Tasmanian 'dragon' springtail is on an Australian two-dollar coin (20 mm diameter), and the chunkier New Zealand 'giant' springtail is on a NZ one-dollar coin (26.5 mm diameter). The Kiwi species have the record for largest springtail in the world, but I think the Tassie ones aren't far behind!

They probably need a different name than springtail though, they're both so gargantuan that they have evolutionarily lost their totally pointless springing organs.
