Today, I have a bit of a hyperfixation about the US #midterms and on Tumblr, somebody wrote about "hopescrolling". I am going to adopt that term, as I was looking for a counterpart to #doomscrolling

The new Assassin’s Creed is really weird.

How cool!

There been times that I thought
I couldn’t last for long
But now, I think I’m able
To carry on

It’s been a long
A long time coming, but I know
A change gon’ come
Oh yes, it will

FIRST PARAGRAPH ON THE FRONT PAGE OF TODAY'S ATLANTA JOURNAL CONSTITUTION: In 1860, an enslaved man named Sheppard Peek was listed among the possessions of William Peek, a white man in Crawfordville. His value was placed at $1,400. On another surviving document, Sheppard signed his name with an X. More than a century and a half later, Sheppard’s great-great-granddaughter, Keisha Lance Bottoms, is Georgia’s governor-elect. https://www.ajc.com/politics/2026/11/keisha-lance-bottoms-crawfordville-governors-mansion/

This cover is so beautiful, holy cow

And I'm so in awe of everything @annaleen.bsky.social accomplished as editor of Starlog. This is a great, mind-expanding magazine about science fiction — but also about weird science and the future. Feels like a miracle.

You owe it to yourself to snag a copy.

Devastated by this news.

Lonnie Thompson was a great scientist, a wonderful human being, and a role model and hero. He will be sorely missed 🙁

A quick break in election coverage…the fine folks at the Midcoast Community Council sent notice that Caltrans is holding a public open house on Wednesday, 18 November from 17:30 (5:30 p.m.) to 19:30 (7:30 p.m.) at El Granada Elementary School to share information about the State Route 1 (SR-1) Surfers Beach Sea Level Rise Adaptation Feasibility Study and gather community input.

The feasibility study will evaluate potential short- and long-term strategies to address recurring coastal erosion and flooding along SR-1 near Surfers Beach, which are being
exacerbated by rising sea levels and other climate change impacts.

OPEN HOUSE DETAILS
• Date: Wednesday, 18 November 2026
• Time: 17:30 to 19:30 (5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.)
• Location: El Granada Elementary School

A better future is possible!

On its 50th anniversary, STARLOG is back, with yours truly as editor-in-chief. Made by humans. Print only. Devoted to space-time, alternate worlds, and the unknown -- in science and fiction!

On stands Nov 13 or you can pre-order below. Let’s see what’s out there.

Overheard at a Santa Fe County voting location today. A voter arrived, with his dog. Poll worker checking the voter in asked the dog’s name.
Voter: “Oscar”
PW: “Does Oscar want to register and vote today?”
Voter: “No. He’s a convicted felon.”
🤣
(Note: in reality, in NM felons who have completed their sentences are eligible to vote.)

You don't actually want LLMs; you want public libraries & librarians.

You only think you want LLMs because you haven't been to the library recently enough or talked to a librarian.

This is a periodic PSA: many people are scent-sensitive! If you have friends with asthma, eczema, migraines, scent allergies, or who are pregnant, don’t get them scented products as gifts! For extra credit, also do not send them gifts in a box that reeks of scented products!

I’m sure there are many more conditions that are sensitive to scents, too. These are just off the top of my head (and the first 3, off the top of my medical history.)

Amen to this. Also, get vaccinated!

#Spotted While Roaming in Aotearoa New Zealand:

A small human is jumping up and down while waiting for Mum to help him cross the road to get to a sausage sizzle.*
Roaring with utmost urgency: "THERE'S NOT GOING TO BE ANY SAUSAGES LEFT!"

A man (40s?) is standing in the gardening tool aisle of a hardware stall.
Saying: "I gotta get this one. It's got attachments eh."
His partner looks doubtful: "do ya need all those?"
"Yeah! They're ATTACHMENTS!"

A golden retriever wearing a polka dot neck kerchief is sitting in the front bucket of a cargo bike.
Woofing and doggy grinning as his human cycles past a bus stop.
So many people. So many smells! So many new friends!
Woof!

A fabulous individual with a neatly groomed beard, wearing glittering huge loveheart earrings and fabulous fashion is roaring a "HELLO!" at a friend approaching down the street.
Their friend hollers: "Give us a twirl darl!"
Doing a pirouette ending in a deep belly laugh and a hug.

A woman (18?) wearing colourful boho clothes does a wiggle shimmy as she leaves a voting place.
Cheerfully saying to a volunteer: "I did tha thing!"
"You did the thing!"
"I did the thing! WOO!"

Any typos spotted in this post just got back from their favourite barbershop. If typos spotted, they'll be colouring their hair, their bathroom, half their towels and possibly their resident not-so-stray cat, Moopsy pink. It's a monthly tradition. They typos don't question it.
