BTW as is tradition I am probably releasing a 3.4.1 very soon, this time with some improvements to the Linux packaging that I decided not to wait for to tag the release.

So turns out Gram is vulnerable to the eMudhra "lets use 4 as our private key" root cert and I've released 3.4.0 to address this:

https://gram-editor.com/posts/release-3.4.0/

I'd encourage everyone to upgrade as soon as possible. Partly so your editor doesn't download things it shouldn't, but also because there have been a lot of improvements and fixes since 3.3.0 so yeah it's a good upgrade in general I hope.

Thank you to Clint from https://getsol.us for letting me know about the vulnerability, I hadn't realized myself.

Nice.

My general approach of simply assuming that any claim by OpenAI or Anthropic is either an outright lie or a mistake continues to bear fruit

Not sure what to make of this thing where people see something like "the AI created a GCC clone" and immediately go "software is done for" and then never investigate that or think about it again or look back and think "huh nothing actually changed and that clone just disappeared, I wonder what that means" but instead read "the AI created a Photoshop clone" and immediately go "software is done for"

A little moment of sadness.

I suddenly wanted to know which color scheme Bram Moolenaar used in vim. Just curious! I had this urge to add it to Gram… Can’t find anyone asking him this though. I’m sure it’s one of the builtin schemes, and that he has probably answered this on mail or IRC at some point. Maybe he switched often. Anyway, now I am feeling sad because I can’t ask him.

"Right now, AI is mostly used for frauds, propaganda, misinformation, generating child porn, scams, spam and warfare. Also the companies producing it thinks there's a 10% chance the technology will destroy humanity. Also the AI is an annoying piece of shit that I hate to interact with. IN CONCLUSION WE HAVE A RESPONSIBILITY TO USE IT BECAUSE PRODUCTIVITY"

Maybe I am the weird one. I am definitely the weird one, OK? I've managed to get this far OK in life, but... waves hands around, exasperated This whole thing has never made sense to me.

Maybe that was why I was drawn to black metal and outsider art as a kid. Maybe that was why I left my home town as soon as I could and return as seldom as I can.

Anyway.

I happened read this article by Martin Fowler: https://martinfowler.com/articles/2026-dont-like-llms.html ...not because LLMs interest me, but because people interest me, they fascinate and confuse me.

Martin Fowler confuses me. I fundamentally don't understand how he thinks, how he can reach the conclusions he does. In the article, every reason and hope he has for positive outcomes from using LLMs are either fear-based or unsubstantiated bullshit. Every fear or worry he has is over something that has already come to pass.

"excited by the potential gains in productivity"

Maybe this was a view that it was possible to hold in 2023? By now it should be obvious that volume of output does not equal productivity. I mean it has always been obvious. We ALL KNEW that counting lines of code was a BAD FUCKING MEASUREMENT and yet you massive idiots can't stop counting lines of code as if you're convinced that God will judge you based on the amount of shit code you produced while alive.

Just look around at the state of software and the world. Where is the productivity, and is it doing us any good?

"I’m fearful of the damage AI might cause: agent swarms taking over our virtual and physical infrastructure, designing bio weapons."

The first of these has already happened! You don't need to fear what is already here. And why limit yourself to bio weapons? AI is already being used to murder innocent people in Gaza and Iran to name just two REAL PLACES where REAL PEOPLE LIVE and where LLM technology is being used to kill children, to target innocent people for crimes they haven't committed, to lie and give false testimony in court, to destroy the social fabric of trust and the democratic process.

Everything you fear is already real! Everything you hope for is a lie!

How can someone exist in the world and not see this? I don't get it!

"One of my most successful life-hacks is to avoid people I don’t like or don’t trust. I decline to interact with them socially, and make a deliberate effort to avoid working with them too, even if they are doing much that is beneficial. I feel that hanging out with pleasant, capable people, the people with integrity, has made my life a far better one. Hence my visceral dislike of interacting with an LLM that’s not just making a pretense of being human, but also posing as the kind of human I walk away from."

So just fucking don't! Like what the fuck dude.

We are now half a decade into a pandemic whose speculated long term effects include cognitive decline at the same time as the world has gently sailed past 432 ppm global average atmospheric CO₂. When I was born we were at 337 ppm. The adverse health effects of prolonged high carbon dioxide exposure are many, but include "reductions in higher-level cognitive abilities".

It's not surprising that everything is exceptionally stupid now.

Fucking sucks though

Slowly working on improving the git history view in Gram, one micro-feature at a time. Now showing refs (and coloured names).

Tech fetishism, the ascription of human agentive powers to machinery, is always a political act. It obscures that the goals, the purposes, embodied in any technology are human purposes; more specifically, that they are the automated purposes of a minute subset of humanity, a class fraction, the twisted, ruthless, ketamined, indoctrinated, emotionally stunted moral nullities that rule Silicon Valley like child-kings, have made themselves the bearers of myriad impossible hopes, and have now bought their way into the Trump court. It says, that’s just how the technology works, it’s a capricious demigod which can either shower us with riches or have us all killed, we must appease it and ensnare it, we must fear it and cherish it, but what we mustn’t ever do is stop throwing money at it, or stop genuflecting to it, or begin to think: this is nothing but our own alienated collective power turned against us by cut-throat capitalists, and in making us the servants of their technology, they try to make us their slaves.

Another aspect of Rust that I don’t like is its capture by companies like Amazon and Microsoft. I have no faith in the future direction of the language being anything other than slop.

Still not a fan of Rust. It took all of the worst patterns of C++ and made them safe, which results in something that’s familiar and “basically fine I guess” but extraordinarily annoying and frustrating to work with. All of the best practices for writing efficient and maintainable low-level code like avoiding allocations or branches are very awkward in Rust. It makes sense as a product of Mozilla which had one of the worst C++ code bases of all time deciding that the real problem of that code base was not architectural or structural but simply that managing all of those pointers manually was hard. In theory it should be possible to write clean Rust but none of the foundational crates are written that way. Async/await is easily the most frustrating aspect of the language and the community is determined to make everything async if it can. Compile times and resource consumption during compilation are terrible and kind of ruins the otherwise great tooling.

nazi punks fuck off!

Gram is in openSUSE! Circles are being closed and all that.

I wanted a Gram shirt to wear to Goatmire (goatmire.com) at the end of September so added one to my shop. Thought I'd link to it in case anyone else is as into toads as I am

edit: of course I forgot the link. https://ziran.myspreadshop.se/gram+editor+toads+hexagon?idea=6a993014af48c111d2b80469

This is so good.

"Sometimes you know that you can do something, but should you do it? “I can do this, but I choose not to.”

On your death bed, nobody is going to care about how many features you pushed on git."

That DHH is a racist is unquestionable and easily proven. People always quibble about the label fascist, mainly because there is no simple definition of the term and so most people don't really understand what is meant by it. Here is a great and succinct explainer (from a 300+ comment thread on lobste.rs) on why it's both fair, accurate and reasonable to call DHH not just a racist but also a fascist:
