New U.S. books of interest for today, October 13, 2026:

SPOKE, Kat Leyh. Believe it or not, this is a cozy post-apocalyptic graphic novel.

OFF THE RESERVATION, Stephen Graham Jones. This is the sequel to THE ONLY GOOD INDIANS, which came out in 2020. Did anyone know that there was going to be a sequel?

THE TULIP POPLARS, Silas House, author of the CliFi near-future dystopian novel LARK ASCENDING, which I highly recommend. Looking forward to this new historical novel.

AS YOU WAKE, BREAK THE SHELL, Becky Chambers. Always with a positive and uplifting message, this is her first book in a new series.

ODETTE RISING, by Julianne Edwards. This novel may be our sleeper hit of the year.

Making the beaver warning sign out of wood was probably not the best idea

Found this little plastic toy horse on my driveway.

Does this mean that I will be visited by the spirits of three Country music singers, the first when the bell tolls One?

More like "run from the song called Dracula."

The view on our return walking from the coffee place this morning. Kawainui Canal at N. Kalaheo Ave, Kailua, Oahu.

If you don't want to read the article, experts put the age of the shark at somewhere between 272 and 512 years. Apparently it's very hard to get exact figures for ages of marine vertabrates. Anyways, that's where that midpoint number of 392 years old came from. Despite the attempts to sensationalize the longevity of the Greenland shark, it's pretty impressive. I wouldn't want to live 300 years or even longer, without safety from humans and a reliable food supply.

If you would like to read a funny short story by a Blackfeet Native American writer, I recommend Attack of the 50 ft Indian, by Stephen Graham Jones. It's silly, and may possibly make you laugh, something you might need right now. It's only 40 pages long.

Maybe one day, we won't even have to mention that it's *not* Columbus Day. May that name be shunned and become the real "c" word.

Meanwhile, my phone's calendar can get fucked.

Happy Hitler/Jewish Diaspora Day! /s

Eldritch horror or cosmic gardener?! RBH-1 may be a supermassive black hole hurtling out of its galaxy at nearly 1,000 km/s, leaving a 200,000-light-year trail of new stars behind it. How the hell does that happen?
