From Dune and ... 🎯

I'm trying to imagine telling myself as a kid in the 90s, or even fifteen years ago: "You'll be dancing around on bridges dressed as a taco because the president is a rapist, and you and your costumed friends will be reporting more news than CBS to an audience of rush hour drivers. Some people will attack you for not wanting a pedophile president, and you'll need pepper spray and sometimes body cams. But at least you meet some really cool people too."

And from the American side?

The European Union (EU) is currently negotiating to fast-track Ukraine’s connection to its GOVSATCOM secure satellite communications program, which began operations in January 2026.

The EU’s multi-orbit satellite program, Infrastructure for Resilience, Interconnectivity and Security by Satellite (IRIS²),
based on the 290-satellite constellation,
is expected to be initially deployed by 2029.

Meanwhile, Canada’s Telesat says its LEO broadband satellite network will enter service in early 2028 and can be extended to allied militaries, including Ukraine

You're gonna read a whole bunch of spin about this, but the bottom line is that Microsoft is planning to lay off 60,000 workers, or about a quarter of its workforce.

I can't think of any situation like this where a mass reduction in force wasn't an extinction-level event for the company. This is less "the boat is taking on water," more like "We've hit an iceberg and now the back half of our unsinkable boat is sticking straight up out of the sea."

They should play this clip across suburban and rural America, which absolutely hates the idea of local data centers.

NOW they come up with this. After my Lifelong fear of dentists caused by the 11 fillings in three sessions when I was a kid. AFTER my son is 26. But WOW, this is amazing:

"A simple liquid painted onto teeth in seconds can stop cavities without drilling, injections, or anesthesia, according to a major clinical trial involving young children. The inexpensive treatment could spare thousands of children painful dental procedures and surgery while paving the way for broader FDA-approved use..."

Apparently Vivek #Ramaswamy went to a Jesuit school. His fellow alumni are not having it with his pro-child rape ad.

For now, I will no longer be uploading to the #Debian NEW queue.

And yes, I will now go outside and do something nice instead of trying to argue on mailing lists about #LLM use in #FOSS. Maybe do the same. The weather is great outside. :)

@john I hope so too. But I have seen too many people on here speaking about not voting for 'the lesser of two evils'.

The lesser of two evils is LESS FUCKING EVIL.

That's not nothing right now.

@Hoodedman Let's be honest. It doesn't work that way in the US. That's how Trump got elected both times. You vote Democrat with green or socialist ideology if there is one on the ballot. If not, you suck it up. There isn't a large enough Green or socialist party to do anything other than elect Republicans by voting for those parties right now. Even Bernie's large coalition wasn't big enough.

@Remittancegirl

I learned a lot about politics in #Serbia from the lunchtime news interview on BBC Radio 4 today.

The student movement has four principles:
- no leaders
- no violence
- listen only to the people, no special interests
- maximum effort

They asked who will be leader now, and asked again, unable to get their heads around a movement without leaders.

The chap said, now he's done one media interview he won't be doing any others because they don't want leaders or spokespeople.

She asked about policy on Russia's invasion of Ukraine. He said there wasn't an official position but explained why they first can't and second don't support sanctions. It made sense in the context of Serbia.

European nations should extend support to Serbia's new freedoms by helping reduce their dependence on Russian gas, and in other ways.
