It appears that Tristan Buckmaster is raising alarms that AI corporations may have snooped on their research so the companies could throw compute at developing proofs for, and gain credit for, advancements in the Navier-Stokes equations. OpenAI then threw a massive amount of compute at the problem, and seemed to try to coerce Tristan into getting credit for it: https://cims.nyu.edu/~tristanb/statement.pdf

> I said that if OpenAI released its result in the way proposed I would go public with what happened. The reply was, “Why would you ruin your career?” I replied that I am an academic, and asked why he thought going public would ruin my career. The reply was, “If you don’t want me to be nice, then I don’t have to be nice.”

Libby Brooks in the Guardian writes, a multiplicity of hoax bomb threats divert passenger flights across Europe. A malign cyber-attack targets fridges in Belgium, Sweden, UK and cold storage of France’s blood service. The actors behind this, be they hostile states, criminal gangs or teenagers yet to be identified operate in a context of deepening global conflicts, building national threat and an accompanying, pervasive sense of vulnerability.
This is the grey zone between peace and war.

"Nobody gives up power voluntarily" is absolute horseshit.

Almost every mature leader gives up power if its what's best for the thing they're leading.

Sure, we often fuck up and end up with sociopaths and psychopaths at the top, and _they_ don't give up power voluntarily.

But it's a pernicious wrong statement that doesn't help us design institutions suited to the rule of law rather than rule by bullies.

Le premier signe de civilisation dans une culture, c'est le droit de manifester.

The Trans agenda has gone too far.

"All the politicians and the media have been trying to lead us down this garden path and nobody's buying it. And this is the real revolutionary thing, is this absolute disconnect between what people have seen with their own eyes, and what we're being told by our own leadership."

The most depressing thing about the current bubble is that so many of the flagship ‘look how amazing AI is!’ things are things where LLMs are a pretty poor fit and other techniques work much better, but the baseline for comparison uses well under 10% of the compute, often under 1%. If you threw 10% of the memory and processor capacity at the non-LLM approach, it would work much better than the LLM approach. Yet it’s easy for OpenAI or Anthropic to burn $10M on a tech demo and incredibly hard to get anyone to spend $1M on a good solution to the same problem.

As long as money is flowing to these companies, they’re starving interesting research of resources because there’s no incentive to build efficient systems when a company is willing to set fire to investors’ money to run the horribly inefficient version for you.

The German govt is rolling out a digital driver's license:

https://www.heise.de/news/Digitaler-Fuehrerschein-kommt-Ende-November-11509430.html

And, from day 1 - in 2026, yes - it only works on OS images allowlisted by two American companies, Google and Apple. Sanctioned by the US government, like e.g. the ICC judges? Can't use your _German_ digital driver's license.

In any sane society this would have been flagged as a massive issue and have simply stopped the app from launching in the first place.

Nobody knows what it means yet.

Curious that there's so much perseverating about "revenge". Let's be clear, when you deliberately mischaracterize justice as "revenge" you succumb to enabling corruption and criminality.
Without accountability we reward corruption, we foment evil, we encourage abuse, unfettered violence toward the weak helpless and innocent, and sanction brutality and mayhem.
A civil society requires justice. A democracy requires justice. Justice requires accountability.
Don't let ANYONE, any media, any pundit, anyone convince you that the erasure of responsibility is noble, is virtuous or ethical - it is not.
Responsibility requires truth, discomfort, penance, moral evaluation, and the requirement of righteous amends, of acts of atonement, to be accountable for and try to repair what you destroyed, brutalized, or murdered.
The future of our democracy requires justice for the crimes committed against our nation, against our most vulnerable. You fix what you break. That's not revenge, that's adult commitment to our national values. E pluribus unum.

@alpenglow @drahardja @inarticulatequilter Yep. Etsy’s biggest investors include BlackRock and Goldman Sachs. Everything changed when they went public in 2015. This isn’t surprising if you’ve been following their trajectory over the past decade. They keep the indie handmade facade but they’re just another extractive corporation.
