To clarify: I don’t trust Proton to guard sensible data anymore. Security matters and is important, especially for a password manager, mail etc.

@protonprivacy

Any recommendations for a serious VPN and password manager?

I'm going to leave Proton. I left 1Password a year ago.

Thanks.

Time to leave #Proton… (Mail, Pass, VPN…)

Tried ci.codeberg.org (based on @WoodpeckerCI). Refreshingly excellent. Much better than Github's CI.

Tor Browser 16.0 is out for desktop and Android! 🧅

Our first stable release based on Firefox ESR 153 brings redesigned settings, optional generic window titles that limit what other applications can learn about the pages you're viewing, a refreshed Android interface, and native support for Linux ARM64.

Behind the scenes, our annual ESR transition audit reviewed over 270 Bugzilla issues to protect Tor Browser users' privacy and security.

Scroll-driven animations are newly available in all major engines! Here's how they work:

:NoAI: As a reminder, the FLOSS.social community is 100% pro-human. We do not allow the use of LLMs in creation of content, or promotion of LLMs. Use of such systems are by default considered network abuse, and our moderation team will respond accordingly.

:ai: Free software folks whose Fediverse servers don't have a pro-human policy, who need a new home can PM us to be accelerated in our queue for new members.

Foly huck. A small story about LLMs.

For historical reasons, I have a spare cassette for road bikes and it is not compatible with any of my own bikes so I want to sell it. Decided it would be helpful for buyers to include the teeth count of the smallest and largest sprocket in the ad, and was in a lazy Saturday afternoon mood so took a picture, gave that to #chatgpt and asked it to do the counting for me. Answer: 36 teeth.

That sprocket size doesn't exist in the Shimano universe.

So I tried to verify its count by asking it to add an increasing number next to every tooth. It complied, and the numbers ran from 1-36. That pictures is included below. You can stop reading now, look at the picture and count along.

If your ADD is not too bad, you'll notice it skipped 18, so we have 35 teeth. Not 36.

However that also doesn't exist in the Shimano universe.

Being as confused as the average republican, I demanded a #recount! It told me 36 again.

Sigh. Decided to do a manual recount while holding the sprocket in my hand. 28. That is a valid size.

Then I looked at the photo with counts again. Turns out the clanker took my original photo as inspiration, and fabricated a photo of a sprocket with 35 teeth. I am not sure what triggered it to do that and I do not want to know.

Your average #LLM is still as bad at counting as they were a year ago. Maybe worse.

Also, do not invest in that stuff ok?

Announcement without the blog post is here, https://floss.social/@hywan/117494563364717555

I'm happy to announce the release of `flaque` 0.1, a fast, concurrent, lock-free, and often wait-free, pool implementation, https://codeberg.org/hywan/flaque.

https://crates.io/crates/flaque

It is on average 1.7 times faster than `deadpool`.

I hope to publish a blog post soon.

MatrixRTC has landed! 📞

The world’s first decentralised, end-to-end encrypted, multiparty VoIP protocol is now part of Matrix.

Every server can run its own conferencing server, calls are E2EE by default, and it’s an open standard. @connect2x has built its own implementation in Tammy, and Element Call and Tammy are calling each other live at #MatrixConf

How it works: https://element.io/blog/operator-i-need-an-exit-from-big-tech-calls/

Why do #governments choose Matrix? It's #adaptable, #interoperable, and vendor agnostic, says Kenneth Edwall, from Sweden. It's #sovereign and #E2EE, says Patrick Weber from Luxembourg. Its #flexibility means it can be designed for specific #government-to-citizen (G2C) comms, without sacrificing privacy or collaborative potential, says Marco Holz from Germany. The #federation allowed France to scale horizontally - anyone can talk with anyone. @numerique_gouv @FITKOfoederal

#MatrixConf

"Matrix has gone from being an interesting experiment to an existential requirement," says @matthew at the #MatrixConf keynote. "It has never been more important for us to control our communications." Matrix's #members make this work possible, allowing the foundation to guard its #independence and #sovereignty. https://matrix.org/foundation/members/

And we have lift-off! 🚀
The doors of The Matrix Conference 2026 are opening in 2mn on the 3rd floor of the Scandic Triangeln in Malmö, and we will start streaming at 10am CEST.

In the meantime, join the fun online!
