Rest in peace.
I will miss your voice.

Whenever I read about speeding up software development by speeding up the "typing in" side of the task, I'm mostly just confused.

My own experience of writing software is that I'm spending 90% of the time clarifying the problem to myself. I suppose the experience will vary substantially based on the type of software one writes, and presumably other factors as well.
Either way, clearly some people have a very different experience than I do.

The recording and slides of the webinar: Copyrightability of LLM-generated code by @fsfe  's Gabriel Ku Wei Bin are now up.

Many thanks to Gabriel for the informative talk, and answering a huge amount of questions on the spot.
And thanks everyone who participated. It was an interesting and lively session.

You can find the link to the recording here: https://nlnet.nl/events/20261029/index.html

I published episode 02.3 of "making minipgp6"

https://codeberg.org/minipgp6/making

The new episode covers cryptographic verification of OpenPGP "detached data signatures":

https://codeberg.org/minipgp6/making/src/branch/main/02.3-signatures_1.md

The next episode will cover adding support for ML-DSA-65+Ed25519 from RFC 9980.

The full video series, including this episode, is available on https://clip.place/c/minipgp6/videos

I'm writing episode 02.3 of "making minipgp" and am very excited that the series finally arrives at actual #OpenPGP *functionality* (and doesn't just forever deal with parsing/serialization of wire formats 😅)

I hope to have this episode recorded soon.
There's still a *lot* of OpenPGP left to write up and record, but it's so nice that this video series is taking shape.

Join us for the webinar on the Copyrightability of LLM-generated code, a legal education training seminar on legal questions arising from the use of LLMs in the creation of Free Software.

Gabriel Ku Wei Bin, Legal Programme Manager at @fsfe will give a talk followed by a Q&A.

October 29, 13.00 CET

For the link to the BBB room and more info, see https://nlnet.nl/events/20261029/index.html. No need to register, but if you'd like a ping in advance you can send an email.

For the past 36h or so, I've fallen into a rather deep rabbit hole about one detail of #OpenPGP data signatures in "text mode" (which normalize the signed input - specifically line endings).

I've gotten very confused during some of that journey, and have written up my (hopefully not overly confused) findings on the IETF WG mailing list:

https://mailarchive.ietf.org/arch/msg/openpgp/cUpg7qSKhVv9myuA01r1lF37PLE/

(There are not two, but three different incompatible behaviors for the normalization 😅 albeit subtly, for varyingly unlikely inputs)

Did someone say free tickets? 😅😎

Securing the open digital infrastructure we all depend on requires more than responding when vulnerabilities make headlines. It requiresd sustained investment in the people and organizsations responsible for maintaining it.

I've published episode 02.2 of "making minipgp6" - it covers reading and writing the contents of OpenPGP v6 signature packets.

https://codeberg.org/minipgp6/making#2-verifying-detached-data-signatures

The next episode will finally do some actual cryptography: We'll write code for cryptographic verification of detached data signatures.

In honor of #FOSDEM rejecting our Diversity, Equity, Inclusivity, and Belonging (DEIB) track, and time permitting, I will be posting numbers about diversity in tech and my personal experiences in IT today.

Feel encouraged to share numbers and experiences as well ❤️

I've written and recorded the new episode 02.1 of "making minipgp6".
It covers reading and writing the contents of OpenPGP v6 public key packets.

https://codeberg.org/minipgp6/making#2-verifying-detached-data-signatures

Once completed, chapter 2 will cover cryptographic verification of detached OpenPGP data signatures.

(I'm writing the script for episode 02.2 now - it will cover Signature packets)

please boost

i have a KMZ horizon camera and want to find anyone who also has one and/or disassembled it (or similar swing-lens camera) and/or thinks they are capable of helping me fix it. i’ll be on #40c3 and will bring it there.

everything seems to be working except for the shutter, as i understand it, shutter speed should in this case regulate the size of the slit, but it doesn’t. and in fact it looks like there’s no slit at all. the shutter is always completely closed. also seems like some previous owner tried to open it using force lol.

other than that it seems completely functional, so i hope to make it work.

I'm preparing to record the next @minipgp6 coding episode (or two) for https://codeberg.org/minipgp6/making.

The next one will cover parsing and serializing key packets and signature packets (this one is bound to be pretty long, once again).

After that, the following (hopefully slightly shorter) episode will cover verification of detached data signatures.

I want to build a community around Obnam, the backup program. Read the blog post and maybe you'd like to join?

The barr collective is exploring an independent, community-governed digital infrastructure co-op for SWANA civil society, in the region and the diaspora: email, files, hosting and help moving off Big Tech, in Arabic, English and French.
If you're part of an organisation or collective in the SWANA region, tell us what you need in a short survey (about 10 minutes, anonymous). Please share!

Anyway: The worst thing an organization's leaders tolerate is what that organization becomes, and the blast radius of a single toxic contributor is huge and largely invisible. For everyone who speaks up to say this behavior isn't acceptable, there are dozens or hundreds of smart, competent people who peer into your community, see that this is how you live and move along without your ever knowing they exist, on their way to a better life somewhere else.

We don't have to live like this.

A thing I said a lot in those first few years was: we are competing on the experience and ergonomics of being a part of this community. Every single person out there who is smart enough to turn the crank on a compiler and figure out how to send us a patch has thousands of options. The process complexity and hard-knock oldschool open source "culture" we believe is acting as a "filter" isn't selecting for brains or talent, it's selecting for a willingness to tolerate bullshit and endure abuse.

I just released #minipgp6 draft v0.0.6

https://codeberg.org/minipgp6/minipgp6

minipgp6 is a very small modular implementation of a modern subset of #OpenPGP

This snapshot reflects refactoring and prototyping I've done over the last weeks.
My main focus has been to flesh out and stabilize the minipgp6-packet crate.

As a next step, I want to work towards a "stable" 0.1.0 release of minipgp6-packet - starting with a first "making minipgp" implementation video for that crate (see https://codeberg.org/minipgp6/making).

On the day that Margaret Hamilton, whose software helped land Apollo 11 on the Moon, died at 90, it's worth noting why computer programming became so dominated by men.

It wasn't remotely because men were better than women at programming. It was because, as soon as men realized how important programming was, they bullied and intimidated women out of the profession. And then smiled smugly and said: "Women can't program".
