The Dodo Nebula vdB152

vdB 152, commonly known as the Dodo Nebula, is a faint reflection nebula located about 1,400 light-years away in the constellation Cepheus. Its bluish glow is produced by starlight scattered by interstellar dust, while the surrounding dark clouds obscure the light of more distant stars.

TIL that Phoenix Contact makes Wago-style lever-actuated PCB and modular connectors? and so do Amphenol? and Wago themselves? some are even compatible with the classic modular screw-terminal blocks?? I’m never designing anything with screw terminals again???

This time I had responsibility and authority, and had still failed.

#firmware #software #engineering Wait, what? 37 firmware revisions to get a soldering iron right? I'd love to see what their commit log looks like...

Probably an ill-advised project, but during the full Moon last weekend I pointed the big boy scope at tiny nebula NGC456 in the Small Magellanic Cloud.

Ill-advised because with a bright Moon, even narrowband filters on the scope can’t stop the dark background of space from being greybrown instead of black.

Still, I got just over 9 hours of useable data and with some slight over-processing it ends up looking pretty nice. I shall have to have a go at it during a set of actual dark nights :-)

Note that all of this is over 200,000 light years away, so even the tiny bright nebulae are in fact enormous.

Also, if you haven’t, go back and watch the 1st episode with the English language track. I’m generally in favor of the existence of dubs because they help expand the reach of anime, but this dub was far and away one of the best and most fun in recent memory!

Morgan Lauré Garrett absolutely killed it as Scarlet El Vandimion, and the writing team behind her gave her some wonderful lines to work with. Nothing that strays too far from the original dialogue. Rather they enhance it all so, so much!

Monthly report for July is out!

https://www.davidrevoy.com/article1167/monthly-production-report-for-july-2026

I'm sharing making-of and behind-the-scenes stories, unpublished visuals, and news about all my background projects. I also share (as usual, without paywall) high-resolution images, timelapses, brushes, layered files, tutorials, hardware reviews and more on my websites.

Thank you for all the comments and your amazing support! Let me know if there's an aspect of my work you'd like to see in my next month's report.

Colorful beads were very popular in the early #medieval period, particularly during the 6th and 7th century.

This necklace was found in the grave of a woman in Donaueschingen-Neudingen. It consists of more than 50 beads made of amber and glass.

Dating ca 525-550 AD.

The goblin girl and elf boy who fell in love have been arrested by the elf guards and are being interrogated.

This picture shows a hand with a gauntlet holding a leather thong necklace with two carved acorns, and a bracelet made from an owlbear beak with gold thread.

If I could ever write 1/100th as good as this, I'd be ecstatic. #writing

I feel like panicking and I was not in control of this situation and I could see at least ten instances now where I’d made wrong decisions and being in control of the situation was really important because otherwise it was in control of me

Confession time!

Friendos, I just thoughtlessly almost did something that I know better than to do. I am, genuinely, horrified and a smidge embarrassed. So I’m taking a minute to turn this into a teachable moment.

I was using a drill to make pilot holes for installing the handles on the kitchen cabinets I recently finished assembling. No big deal. What my derp-ass failed to do until the drill was actually running was realise that my hair wasn’t tied back. I almost *never* wear it loose, so it isn’t really something I usually have to think about! Which is still not a good excuse.

Now, if you have never had a safety brief by a handy relative or a gruff shop manager, lemme explain.

Any tool that turns under power can very quickly snag an errant strand and do some extremely bad damage to your look.

(Anyone who feels inclined to share a gruesome personal experience in the comments, please CW that appropriately for folx who may need to moderate their intake of that kinda detail.)

So in that spirit:

:yell: I’m your builder daddy now.

If you have long hair, pull it back completely. A long ponytail or braid that hangs over your shoulder isn’t safe enough.

If you have earrings that dangle, a necklace, a bracelet, or a ring on your finger. Take it off before you start.

It doesn’t take an industrial machine. Any basic DIY powertool that has a rotating element can mess you up.

Maybe you’re used to working with all the powertools, but for your whole life until recently you’ve worn your hair pretty short. Consider this part of the learning curve for dealing with long hair… along with maybe needing an assist opening jars. 👀 :anartrans_symbol_black: and I love this for you.

You can do this diy thing. Make stuff! Fix stuff! Seize the means and take back the commons! But please know your tools and use them safety.

Also, I’m proud of you.
