War keeps you trapped in a constant state of alert. Even when the bombing stops, the fear inside you stays awake.

We don’t want to be brave… we just want to feel safe.

The hardest thing I have ever had to face is not fear, hunger, or exhaustion.

It is standing helplessly while the people I love suffer—and being forced to choose who needs help first when every one of them needs me.

My daughters need food and care. Sham is sick and needs treatment. My husband needs treatment. My mother-in-law needs medication.

How can a mother choose between the people who are her whole world?
