One feature that’s kind of unique is that the admin can create a ‘bubble’ timeline that contains only posts from a curated list of select instances. So for example, I’ve created a bubble containing known Canadian instances.
The web interface is super clean and lightweight; I could see that being a big boon to folks accessing it from old phones or low-spec hardware. #littleFedi
Boom! Coming to you live(ish) from #littleFedi. Installation wasn’t too difficult but might cause issues for the novice user. My first go-around resulted in laggy performance for reasons that elude me. I’ve relocated everything to my Synology NAS, which is *way* underspeced vs. the machine I first had it running on, but it’s performing much better. The web interface is clean and quite customizable. And accessing it via an app is pretty seamless.
So I did it: I managed to build a Glitch-Soc instance in Docker using the official Glitch-Soc image. For a lot of folks on here that’s probably trivial, but for me that’s a pretty big deal.
One thing of note is the previous image I was using (from linuxserver.io) didn’t spin up separate ‘www’ and ‘streaming’ containers—everything is handled under a single ‘www’. I’m guess the reason to run both is something to do with being able to load-balance on a bigger server?
Happy ‘Attempt Database Transplant Day’ to all who celebrate! 💣
Hello, world.
I’m pleased with how the containerized test instance is chugging along. The performance is great, and the system resource usage is definitely better and reliability is rock-solid.
The second stage, of bringing a second instance online had a couple of hiccups, with port and filepath collisions, but the logging within Portainer was easy enough to access/understand to allow me to troubleshoot it.
Stage three will involve attempting to migrate one instance (bclocal.news) into its containerized version. To this point I’ve never successfully migrated an instance using pgdump, but I’ve got a good feeling about this. If all goes well I’ll migrate mstdn.fname.ca over and go from there.
At the moment, my docker host is running as a VM, so there’s likely a performance hit from running containers within a VM, within a host (virtual-ception, LOL!).
The endpoint will be to eliminate VMs altogether and run everything containerized.

Sorry, busy
The Canadian government has issued an order to change all pound cakes in the country to kilograms, which will make them more than twice as good.
Provincially, the UCP-ers ruling Alberta with a charter rights eviscerating iron fist refused to comply (as/per), stating they preferred to side with the separatists and continue to get pounded by foreign interests alongside them.
Danni Smith was on a saudi prince' private jet selling ab out, and was unavailable for comment.
Hope y’all topped off your tanks last week…
