**'It’s magic’: scientists rediscover how to make ancient Roman colour-changing glass

I was in a taxi the other day, an electric Toyota, and it was constantly bugging the driver with various “driver safety aids”, like literally a stream of bongs and chimes and sirens. And half of them were “driver inattention! Sit up and look forwards!” He was sitting up and looking forwards, but also he was black, so the car’s interior camera was not registering him properly. But hey, tech is neutral and AI doesn’t encode bias.

What an extraordinary opportunity to hear indigenous people in 1950 speak in language about their own displacement. And how unsurprising that no white folx at the time ever thought to listen.

This is how histories are written, & histories erased.

This building near Waterloo Station was once the terminus for the London Necropolis Railway, a venture that aimed to reduce pressure on the capital's burial grounds by transporting bodies to the enormous Brookwood Cemetery in Surrey. Funeral trains carried coffins and mourners (tickets had to be purchased for both) to Brookwood in around 50 minutes. The cemetery had separate stations for Anglicans and Non-conformists and trains and waiting rooms were strictly segregated on class lines. At the London station, corpses were laid out in a chapel room so people who couldn't make it out to Brookwood could pay their respects. A steam- powered lift would then convey the coffins up to the platforms. The London Necropolis Railway was, however, not as successful as had been hoped and was wound down after the London terminus was badly damaged in World War II. #history #gothic #folklore #death #railways #weird #London #Victorian #Halloween #31DaysofHalloween #steampunk

The world is full of mysteries, including why a perfectly good afternoon can be derailed by remembering something embarrassing from 2009. Somewhere, a stranger has forgotten your name entirely. Balance has been restored. #gooderliving

Drop-In Time is a time where I hang out in a room at the library with a big table and a lot of chairs and help people with their technology problems for two and a half hours. These are their stories. It was cold today so I was warming up some water for tea and by the time I got upstairs at three past the hour there were four people waiting for me. Whoops!

Bob and Kathy had a Medicare prescription drug plan that wasn't going to be around next year so they needed help finding a new one.

Baking up some synonym buns, just the way grammar used to make 'em.

somebody please take AI away from anybody and everybody involved in commercial food sales, marketing, and/or distribution

Today's challenge: conduct a completely unnecessary investigation into why one particular word sounds suspicious. Build your case, question the syllables, and reach a verdict. Present your findings to a magpie. #gooderliving

One of many things that's irksome about "are LLMs conscious" discourse is that humans are by and large fucking awful at telling what is and isn't conscious.

People got vibesick over ELIZA for fuck's sake! A lot of people playing Portal got broken up over melting down the Weighted Companion Cube, which is categorically inert even in the plot of the game.

At the same time, a lot of folks reject the humanity of neurodiverse people or people of color. We plain suck at determining consciousness.

“If you don’t use AI you’re going to get left behind.”

Gosh, I sure hope so. I see where you’re going and it sucks.

@captainvellalives Last night I couldn't find my phone, so I picked up my phone to see if my phone was under it.

I didn’t lose any money this quarter, so technically I’ve made $80 billion more than Anthropic.

I guess it boils down to:

Have you considered that the reason you think that some person who is "claiming to be autistic" is weird may be because they are autistic?
