On the #disinformation medium X, you can now read that Russia has won the Ukraine war (1).

Why? Because there is almost no moderation on the platform, so you can get to 100,000 followers on lying (2), even though the platform knows you are connecting via VPN (3) to conceal the fact that you are Chinese (4).

Choose #Mastodon.

Everybody (who is not phobic about snakes) needs to watch the video in this journal article. (It's about a recently described method of snake locomotion)

Cats are crabs

I still think RSS is one of the web’s best features. No algorithm deciding what I see, no need for an account, and no platform standing between a website and its readers. https://ronaldsvilcins.com/2026/08/31/why-every-website-should-have-an-rss-feed/

Lunch break. You deserve it!

i was having problems logging into my #github account on the website; shh works fine.

i'd enter my login id, and as soon as i did that, the password field would be disabled.

i did wonder if this was in order to force me to use a pass key — but, how would i set one up if i could not log in? (i'm happy with 2fa, actually.)

but, no. it's stupider than that.

it works if you enter the password first, then click on the user id field above it, and enter your login.

To mispronounce a word because you've only ever seen it written down means that you read more widely than your contemporaries. It is a badge of great honour.

Just mis-read a book title as “The joyful song of the porridge.”

Happy Monday, everyone!

ANYONE WHO THINKS I'M THIN-SKINNED HAS NEVER SEEN ME MOLT.

Report: Palantir Targets UK MPs With ‘Intimidating’ Letters

"British MPs who criticised Palantir in parliament received 'intimidating' letters from the US spytech firm".

Eg, Palantir warned Clive Lewis that it "was surveilling his activities relating to Palantir last month", a letter that Lewis described as “very Big Brother” & an “implicit threat”.

Funny thing is, I interceded with one of the mods to get a mutual migrated there after they were blocked from signing up due to an automated process. Now they are no longer a mutual 😞

Mozilla: Hmm…what do people want?

People: a browser

Mozilla: a social bookmarking service!

People: we want a browser.

Mozilla: A New Tab ✨experience✨

People: Just a browser.

Mozilla: Colorways! Buy a limited time color!

People: Please make a good browser.

Mozilla: People want AI! AI superpowers!

People: A browser. To show webpages.

Mozilla: Remember those older memes? Don’t they remind you of how things were before the web went to shit?

People: From back when you made a browser?

Today's challenge.

The GDPR may not be perfect - few laws are - but boy would I prefer to have it (or its UK sibling) than not to have it.

If someone wants to abolish the GDPR, my starting point is that they want to do something with people's personal data that I won't like.

Just read the best answer to a stupid ice breaker question someone was asked at work.

Q: What kitchen appliance would you be?
A: A slow cooker. Leave it alone for 8 hours and it just gets on and does the job.
