Crossing my fingers that I live in the kind of country that would elect someone like Abdul El-Sayed and not the kind of country that would elect someone like Mike Rogers. Rinse and repeat across 50 states and so many seats and contests. A lot rides on tomorrow.
I’m sad to say I’ve recently joined the “unexpectedly been made redundant” gang 😢
So I’m now looking for a new role where I can bring my 20+ years of frontend dev experience to a team where things like user experience, design and accessibility are valued and who still care about the 'craft' of building good things for the web.
If anyone knows of any teams who fit that criteria and are currently hiring I would greatly appreciate a heads up 🙏
He everyone. Kim Crawley has displayed more guts than I've ever had in the fight against the AI/LLM destruction of everything we care about.
Her latest Kickstarter is https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/kimcrawley/how-i-became-the-hacker-who-you-hate/
And as part of it, for not a lot of money you can get that book plus her other books Technofascism Survival Guide and Recovering from GenAI.
well, here it comes
beware accounts posting about all the “disinformation” going around about proton’s abuse of its employees and use of LLMs
maybe don’t fall for a second substack post glazing andy yen from an account that hasn’t posted anything before or since https://cyberplace.social/@GossiTheDog/117536896547997018
e: to clarify, Kevin is fine, he didn’t boost that horrible fucking substack post to my knowledge and I’d be surprised if he did
it took a while, but the bash script i wrote to find the most popular article category on wikipedia by curling every single article has finally finished. no i don't know what a "database dump" is. i can now reveal that the most popular category by far is 429 Too Many Requests
Some fun autumn shots i had while taking a walk today :3
Just a reminder that open-source developers depend only on your donations.
We have no other way to cover our costs.

The Financial Times report Anthropic’s IPO is now likely to receive a Junk credit rating, according to the anchor investor in the deal.
Anthropic, Blackstone, KBRA, Morningstar DBRS and S&P declined to comment. Fitch and Moody’s did not respond to requests for comment.

I dumped Proton when Yen blathered about the GOP being better for privacy... Glad I did even though it was disappointing to have to move email addresses again.
For those shopping for email providers, I use Posteo. At the time I was looking at them, AI hadn't quite been shoved everywhere yet so I didn't ask them their policy. https://posteo.de/en
I wrote support to ask what I could tell those who are considering Posteo now about what their AI policy is. This was the reply:
is there anyone out there hiring computer programmers anymore? or has everyone decided that they only want chatbot operators?

Excellent news, the Gestapo have been doxxed!
watched Coyote vs. Acme with daughter. she was invested on this as it's one of those movies where the entire animation was finished but due to the shredder for tax returns, a form of spiritual violence against her whole class, and only came to public due to great backlash.
the movie is good. I place it with Roger Rabbit as a great of this subgenre, where cartoons coexisting with humans are a sort of underclass or apartheid situation. I saw someone describe it as "Coyote versus modernity" and that tracks; Coyote and Road Runner are maybe the purest of the Looney Tunes, the closest it ever got to something like folklore, and in this movie Acme is turned into an expy of the megacorps that came to define our lives, an Amazon/Apple/Google pastiche.
it's still a movie for chlidren and nostalgia bait for adults (every character is a cartoon, not just the cartoons). I am maybe a bit ashamed of being actually moved by the simple message. the message being of course that the Coyote, definitionally, both never wins, and never stops. I've been talking a lot this year of the jape that to be an anarchist means to be right and lose, again and again, and how that stopped being funny when the losses involved death, and how I feel like all my life has been a series of "welp, we tried", and there's a point where "we tried" isn't good enough anymore, where you want the fascists to be dead and she to be alive but what you have is the opposite. but what can you do? pick up the broken pieces of ourself, put yourself together. grab some blueprints and white chalk. concoct the next plan.
The other intellectually dishonest argument has to do with taxes.
"Europeans pay as much as 50% of their income to taxes," I hear both from Americans and Europeans who complain about their system.
If those taxes are paying for "free" healthcare, education, worker protections, housing, infrastructure, etc., that's an ***AMAZING*** bargain.
Yeah, it's harder to acquire wealth there.
Another way of saying it: It's more difficult to become a money hoarder.
Money hoarders are perverts.

Imagine if more of our so-called #FOSS "leaders" had the backbone to stand up and lead like this.

'Hey everyone, remember the internet before Google and AI wrecked everything? Well, we do, and we're working with Google and AI tools to make sure that it stays dead and never comes back! Memes! Memes! Use our browser!'
