#DoorsDay

I've been blogging since 1998 - and a while back, I was very privileged to be interviewed about my journey writing on the web for 28 years. It went up today: https://web-weaving.jamesg.blog/23

Hello friends! I revamped my resume to focus squarely on my 20+ years of experience as a frontend engineer in the hopes of fitting into a specific role. I have many backend skills as well, but browser-focused dev & UX is my happy place.

I'm definitely comfortable working on contract, but I'm also open to FTE if remote work is possible (I'm based in Portland, OR and unable to relocate).

I ❤️ accessibility, performance, and respect for all users.

@daringfireball I'm all for optimism but Wang's Utopian framing seems incomplete if not horribly flawed in a Join Our Cult And Experience Heaven way only to find dark tradeoffs you never imagined nor consented to. The permanent part: you have to trust Meta to act in your (and only your) best interests. Forever. And there's no other party in industry or government to compel that fiduciary relationship. If I don't trust Meta now, what would they have to do for me to trust them with my whole life?

https://triage.ai helps you defer or jettison tasks to stay in your token budget. personalized by your values, goals, promises to others, boringness, chance of redo, risk appetite this week, sunk costs, duplication of effort, perishability of whatever the outcome is supposed to be, obviousness of better ways to define the task, chance that THIS is the task that triggers something horrific. I'm making this up but...

@Daojoan thinking about pairs and teams who write collaboratively. Kerouac Together, or something.

Very proud that The AI Con is a finalist for the 2026 Washington State Book Award (General Nonfiction/Biography)

Don't let your kids play #concussionball

Are there air particulate sensors on a chip? Humidity? Air pressure? Air temperature? Would love my watch or phone to tell me about indoor air quality (smoke, CO2 alerts), weather events based on edge perception and peer analysis. #wawx #decentralization

AI "context burden" kinda rhymes with cognitive burden. Useful metaphor.

@hkrn teaching Claude to design for humans... We can barely get humans to think deeply about wants, needs, habit, morals, deception, illusions, etc. The fundamental vocabulary of software interaction seems stalled. Asking a regurgitation engine to... seems beyond what we're ready to teach our bots

Intersection barriers make this even worse.

So at what point do data center operators switch from burning tokens for cash to mining Bitcoin?

Best #economy read of the day is about how defunding the US commons denies the American Dream to generations. Food, shelter, marriage, childcare, education, safety are out of pocket instead of subsidized by society. #economics https://xcancel.com/i/article/2077113148524417439

thom hogan: I’ll put it bluntly: some of the best innovation in camera design is now coming out of China. Because that relies upon communication (radio waves) to mobile devices, it’s now possible US citizens will not see the next great future camera. This is the way empires die: they try to wall themselves off from competition. <-- same with renewables and a whole bunch of other things https://bythom.com/newsviews/finally-some-news.html

You gather your most expensive people into a room to make your most important decisions. Then, somewhere in the second hour, the room quietly gets worse at making them. Not the people. The room.

I now travel with a portable CO2 monitor. Outdoors it reads around 400 parts per million. In a closed meeting room with a handful of people in it, I have watched it climb past 2,000. The photo here is a real reading: 2,143.

That number matters more than it looks. Researchers at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory put people in a chamber and varied only the CO2. At 1,000 ppm, performance dropped significantly on six of nine decision-making measures compared with a clean-air baseline of 600. At 2,500 ppm, seven of the nine fell substantially, some into a range they called dysfunctional. A separate study out of Harvard found cognitive scores declining as CO2 rose, with the steepest losses in exactly the domains you called the meeting for: strategy, planning, and using information under pressure.

An inflight magazine ad touted "Lobster Day" in Seattle, the first day of Spring when the sun come out, the shorts and T-shirts went on, and everyone sunburned until they were red as lobsters. Now the @TheNeedling calls out #Sunburn as a season. #PSA #SPF100 https://theneedling.com/2026/05/16/seattleites-pumped-for-first-day-of-sunburn/
