A TV with a really bad case of vertical ghosting. Unfortunately not obviously caps, so was quite far beyond what we can do at the repair cafe.
A vhs player that seemed to be stuck. At least it started working once we manually moved the drive wheels a little bit.
Reasonably good fix rate, and we just about covered the hall hire with donations (despite the room being three times more expensive than our usual room)
Really busy #repairCafe today. The craft fare seemed to make a big difference.
A 20 year old hp printer that couldn't detect paper, cleaned it and it started to work.
The electric bbq from last month came back with the part. Fixed and working now.
A friend with a lamp who I'd spoken to already came with the replacement switch. Fitted the new switch but then found the earth connection was dodgy when doing the pat test. Fixed.
Didcot #RepairCafe today. We're *not* in our usual place today. We are up in the civic hall near the library as its international repair day today.
Come along from 2pm till 5pm, though please dont turn up at 4:45 and expect things to be fixed, we're good but we are not witches.
The usual range of fixers should be there, electricals, fabric, tools, sharpening. There is also apparently a craft fare on at the same time so there are more reasons than usual to come along.
It's pretty bullshit that suddenly the industry is saying you need to spend hundreds of dollars of money per month to code. Not even 5 years ago, you could write production code on a potato quality laptop you got for free from your neighbor who was throwing their old ones out.
we're back. https://nora.jewelry/
There's a poll going round the Fedi at the moment about whether you would be able to use an AED/defibrillator on a woman having a heart attack and a lot of people are commenting they'd let the trained person who brought it use it. In the UK at least you don't need to wait for ambulance staff to bring it, they're in lots of public locations like stations, shopping centres and churches. In an emergency if you're on the phone to the ambulance service they will tell you where the nearest one is, but if you want to familiarise yourself with the locations of nearby ones just to be prepared you can see them here: https://www.defibfinder.uk/
I mostly like my car (as much as one can like having a bery expensive thing that they'd rather not have but have to). But at this time of year I always want to have words with whoever designed the engine bay.
Tell me you've never actually refilled the one thing in here I'm actually supposed to regularly refil, with out using words.
To make it more annoying is there is plenty of room on the other side for the prop.
Ok now im home on a stable connection... MOOOOONNNNNN
Huh meant to be a picture with this signal is an issue apparently
Having to restrain myself from yelling MOOOON on the train tonight.
Read the _entire_ thread, please: https://cosocial.ca/@mhoye/117439531864946276
Linux is lost. In the meanwhile, we'll be stuck with it for a decade at least, but it's gone. I have no hope that anyone involved is capable of learning or course-correcting any more, and it was badly off-course before the slopocalypse. This is just the final nail in its coffin.
Which means that there's a good chance somebody reading this is going to start the project that becomes its successor. When you do, *learn these lessons*.
Ok, so who knew this existed and didn't tell me?

It's a cafe, where model trains deliver food direct to your table. They even called it Nibbles Railway Cafe.
Definitely an idea for a future #emfcamp
And to be explicit about this: a long-running filter that's selecting for a willingness to tolerate bullshit and endure abuse is exceedingly useful if you're a terrible manager or a sex pest, two classes of people who have notably flourished in free software for a very long time.
But when smart people have choices, and they choose not to tolerate mismanagement and abuse and stop choosing you, either you grow up or soon all you have are people who think abuse and mismanagement are normal.
Really wish with type systems there was a nice semantic for "At least one of these three fields must be populated"
e.g:
def something(a: str|None, b:str|None, c:str|None) :
Having some way to define that one of a,b, or c must have a value. Sure you can do this at run time with manual checks, but it would be handy some times if it could be checked for.
We'll have to do "AI" rehab for folks once this hype is over. I'm not even kidding.
At #foss4guk today I announced our release of cloud-native version of the UK LiDAR-derived DEM data from the Environment Agency: 1m resolution DTM and DSM data that you can easily download, mosaic, query etc!
Data available at https://source.coop/rebalance-earth/ea-dem, and slides at https://rtwilson.com/downloads/Robin%20Wilson%20-%20FOSS4G%20UK%202026%20-%20Slides.pdf
bonus points for the "buy from bsi" link in the first post not actually linking to the correct document, but the BSI homepage.
(its 151 quid to get a copy of the standard)
The thing I "love" about iso standards is there is no way for a normal person to actually verify something complies.
I remember back when my son was born I was thinking I would make his cot. Then I discovered there is a standard for the construction of cots to make sure they are safe for babies. I remember the standard doc being hundreds of quid to read. I didn't build the cot but I also noticed I had no way to prove the ones I saw in shops actually complied either.
"oh cool, a new image format. Wonder if I can do any fuckery with it like I did with tiffs."
"oh ... never mind"
