PRESS RELEASE: Activists aboard the Greenpeace ship Arctic Sunrise have placed giant boulders to block bottom trawling across 116 km² of the Southern North Sea Marine Protected Area.
The UK government must ban destructive fishing in ALL protected waters.

On the off chance that #electrochemistry feed here is active, I'm looking for a decent (both in sensitivity and accuracy) and affordable (preferably all-in-one) Eh sensor suitable for seawater and marine porewater (high ionic strength).
Any recommendations?

@ChrisMayLA6 Glasgow University went through this process a few years ago. They discovered that transatlantic Trade in tobacco, sugar and cotton had largely paid for their university.
They decided that reparations were impractical so they supported tertiary education in the affected areas and endowed various university places at Glasgow.
So supporting the future as a way of recognising the abuses of the past.
Sam Altman said it's "quite terrible to have everybody have a bunch of the world's limited supply" of DRAM sitting in personal computers.
You know what Sam? I think that it's quite terrible to have all the billionaires have a bunch of the world's money sitting around in their personal bank accounts unused when there are people living on the streets and children going hungry.
And also, as always: Go fuck yourself Sam Altman.
@990000 @SmudgeTheInsultCat it's quite simple. You can build a simple version yourself. Take a bunch of text files, count how often each word pair occurs versus the total number of word pairs: that's your frequency table. Now start from a word (the input) and from there close the next one by random number generation and going over the frequency table of pairs where the first of your seed, until you find the matching pair: that gives you the next word, repeat with the second as seed, forever. To make it stop, also record in the frequency table how often a word is terminal (has no next word), and stop generating when your random generator hits the terminal “pair”.
Congratulations, you got yourself a simple Markov chain. The only difference is that when you throw resources at the problem you can have longer chains (“deep” learning), and train (build the frequency tables) on more texts.
One woman was arrested yesterday at the #Usembassyprotest for holding a placard repeating the words of writer Sarah Helm, the wife of national security advisor Jonathan Powell. Helm wrote, “God help us authors who support Palestine and Palestine Action” in a post on (another social media site) on 15 October.
Two days later, the Met said the post “did not meet the criminal threshold” – and yet on Saturday its officers arrested a protester for using the same phrase, except that the word “authors” had been substituted for “retirees”.
Daft, yes it is

As the article is clear, there can surely be no better metaphor for the Trump administration and its Defence Secretary. Literally "move fast and break things". https://www.irishtimes.com/opinion/2026/10/31/mark-oconnell-is-there-a-better-metaphor-than-pete-hegseths-staff-punching-a-hole-in-a-wwii-globe/?utm_source=sfmc&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=IT_EDIT_MorningBriefingEmail_202512_v3.0_RSS_UTM_PNG_Logo&utm_term=top_stories&utm_id=221129&sfmc_id=2707723&utm_content=Mark_O_Connell_Is_there_a_better_metaphor_than_Pete_Hegseth_s_staff_punching_a_hole_in_a_WWII_globe_
Good morning, Glasgow, and what a glorious autumn day we have in the city today! This is how the university currently looks as it rises about the trees of Kelvingrove Park.

Had an interesting online exchange with an event organizer who asked me to repost their AI-generated car event flyer. I declined, and they asked why because AI is the latest and greatest thing. They were really polite and curious about it, so I linked my site https://whynoai.info and thanked them for being curious.
A day later they came back to me and said that they now understood why I took my position and that they respected it.
I like to think that I helped shine some light on this topic for one more person.
EDIT: I added a “It’s misinformation” section. Hat tip to @xanna
Keep this in mind when people claim cars mean business — closing Central #Madrid to cars over holidays resulted in a 9.5% boost in retail spending on its main shopping street: STUDY.
There was also a 71% drop in air pollution.

Closing Central Madrid To Cars...
"Once upon a midnight dreary, as I pondered weak & weary,
Over many a quaint and curious volume of forgotten lore -
While I nodded, nearly napping, suddenly there came a tapping,
As of some one gently rapping, rapping at my chamber door.
It was a food delivery driver - but he had the wrong floor..."

Experience of OpenBSD so far:
It's like in those episodes of shows where they visit another town and it's exactly the same as the usual town but different in some subtle but narratively important way
the fact that "I hacked a website" / "I hacked a javascript library" can lead to a TWO BILLION DOLLAR theft is fucking wacko. also what the fuck do you even do with that quantity of cryptocurrency as an attacker. it's not like you can just ask some non-KYC exchange to hand you a billion dollars in any currency, monopoly money or otherwise. you might as well have stolen an aircraft carrier.
"Has anyone here ever played 'Core Wars'?"
It wasn't the weirdest question our lecturer had asked the class, but it was close. Professor Artemisia Berman had finished the syllabus for RE211 Comparative Religion and Metapsychology last week; this final lecture of the term was listed as "Coda: Conspiracy Theories".
"It's an old computer game", she continued, "where the players write software programs that all reside in the address space of a single simulated computer. The goal of each program is to eliminate the others by overwriting their memory, and to maximise its own survivability by replicating to control the shared address space. This is directly analogous to religions and other metacognitive entities."
A murmur ran around the room. This was a little more off the wall than usual.
"As you'd know if you've read my book 'The Origin of Metaconsciousness in the Arthropoidal Hivemind', it is my thesis that metacognitive entities such as anthives and beeswarms made the leap to mammals around a hundred and fifty thousand years BCE. Religions were the first metacognitive entities to run on the mammalian brain; since then joined by nation-states, corporations, conspiracy theories and political parties."
I was sitting up straight now. I'd heard of the epithet "Bizarro Berman" applied to Dr B and her off the cuff closing lectures covering extrasyllabic material. The University had tried to stop these, but tenure still meant something at The Big U.
Berman continued: "The common goal of all these entities is survival. And like in core wars the way to do that is to expand territory and eliminate competitors."
"This semester we have reviewed the major religions that are still executing on human brains today. We've seen that these all feature a characteristic fictive origin narrative. For example Judaism purports to have begun around 2000BCE yet the entire text of the Pentateuch in fact dates to no earlier than 300BCE, Christianity has no evidence for the historicity of its founder, with gospel texts unable to be substantiated before the second century of the common era, and some not before the tenth. Islam, Buddhism, Zoroastrianism, Sikhism, and all the others we've studied consist of a narrative that, looking back, shades into myth somewhere in the first quarter of their purported histories."
"Why do religions do this? Camouflage! A metacognitive entity executing on a hundred million brains for several centuries has sufficient spatiotemporal baseline to manifest a very small retrotemporal instantiation—say a virus or a tumor—in one brain. But if the founder is lost in mythical nonhistory, retroassassination becomes a crapshoot."
"The same is true today, Bermuda Triangle, Roswell Incident, MAGA, Facebook, all these metacognitive entities transition from fiction to actual history /somewhere/ in their development but their survival in part depends on concealing the phase-change from competitors."
This is FASCINATING. Researchers were able to pin down the cause of measurable global 60 second power spikes to software that does regular tasks on the minute mark. They found large scale battery installations as one major cause, but obviously this is true for any other computerized system that does cron jobs and has a synchronized clock. As weird as it sounds, adding random 0-59.999s delays to cron jobs in Linux distributions and other software would actually help the power grid.
