🇺🇲 🇺🇦 #Ukraine has been waiting nearly a month for U.S. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth to approve missiles for its Patriot and NASAMS air defense systems, President Volodymyr Zelensky said Oct. 26.
The world needs the UN. And the UN needs us all.
This United Nations Day, we reaffirm the importance of working together to tackle global challenges no nation can solve alone.
Over the years, the EU has worked hand in hand with the UN and partners around the world to address issues that affect us all, from peace and security to human rights, climate change, and global health.
And we will continue to work together.
Europe will always stand for international law and multilateralism.

ISC has been fortunate to have @ondrej as our Director of DNS Engineering since 2017. But independently of his day job, he is an important maintainer of PHP packages for Debian and Ubuntu.
This has become even more significant over the last few days as the PHP RCE vulnerabilities have been disclosed.
We are so proud of Ondřej, and grateful for him and all the other unsung heroes of the global Internet who work for the common good.

Dutch bank ABN Amro (one of the big 3) is at risk of being hit by US sanctions, because of services it provides to the ICC.
Worst case scenario ABN AMRO would be excluded from the international banking system, which would be the "corporate death penalty" and has already caused another bank, the Amsterdam Trade Bank, to go under.

Africa is endowed with some of the world’s largest known reserves of critical minerals. Renewed global interest in securing stable supplies of these minerals has revisited attention on the continent’s infrastructure and logistics corridors.
Sustainable corridors in the 21st century succeed as integrated economic systems. They connect ports to reliable road, rail, logistics, energy, and industrial networks, stimulating businesses and further demand for corridor development.

We can identify most of the companies via flight-tracking, but there's a need for real public transparency on this.
That said, there's no way the SAAF could've done all these flights even if its C-130BZs were fully operational, and new aircraft would've cost far more.
R2.4 billion over 5 years would not have paid for even a single A400M, Y-20, Il-76MD-90, C-17, or other heavy lift aircraft. A Y-20 is about R5 billion.
It might buy one, at best two, C-130Js or C-390s.
@ehashman Consider that it's even worse than you think...
A rare book is more than just the letters on a page. There's information about the binding technology used, the ink, the paper processes, the fonts and formatting, printer artefacts.
Who knows what insights about history and past technology we may have been able to extract (non destructively) from the physical book, instead of feeding it into a mulcher.

I spent the past few days going down various fascinating rabbit holes using a nifty new service called Decryptads.com, which scrapes a metric ton of adtech data from websites and apps about who they allow to collect data and serve ads.
A search in DecryptAds for the hugely popular sports network espn.com, e.g. reveals 143 ad partners and 19 registered data broker domains are listed within its ads.txt and app-ads.txt files. That data broker information is gradually becoming available because four states — California, Oregon, Texas and Vermont — have recently passed laws requiring data brokers to register if they buy or sell data on consumers from those states. DecryptAds reports that almost half of those data brokers are collecting geolocation data from espn.com visitors who aren’t blocking ads, while another three disclose that they collect device fingerprints and sensitive personal information.
DecryptAds also makes it easy to learn the beneficiaries and national origins of the advertising firms lurking in apps and websites, displaying a conspicuous warning when adtech partners of an app or website are based in “geo-risk” areas like China and Russia, or in countries with strong financial and political ties to both — such as Cyprus and the United Arab Emirates (UAE).
According to DecryptAds, espn.com works with four different advertising entities that are based in either Russia, China or the UAE, including the adtech firm Between Digital, which lists a New York address. However, the dossier on Between Digital flags them as a Russian firm, showing that their publisher offers (PDF) are processed through Alfa Bank, Russia’s largest private commercial bank and one of several financial institutions placed under U.S. sanctions in 2022 after Russia invaded Ukraine.
A search for several top U.S. military news websites — including armytimes.com, airforcetimes.com, defensenews.com, navytimes.com, marinecorpstimes.com and federaltimes.com — shows they all allow Between Digital to serve ads and track users, as well as two entities in the UAE and another in the ownership secrecy haven of Panama. DecryptAds reports that Between Digital is collecting ad data on approximately 55,000 partner websites.
This service is a gold mine for security researchers, journalists and anyone interested in privacy, adtech, AI slop sites, residential proxies, malvertising, etc. Want to read more? Check out today's story:

I'm so proud of our government institutions that are moving to #Mastodon 🥹
There are now several Dutch ministeries, provincies, agencies and municipalities, but also officials such as state secretaries and ministers on social.overheid.nl 🥳
A big thank you to @manfredzielinski for making this happen.
we have a Forgejo instance at the Dutch government now and it's great!
A lot of the UI is actually smoother and faster than GitHub, there's no annoying upselling, no forced AI ('are you sure you don't want this reviewed by an agent?'), and the fact that we run rather than rent it seems optimal strategically.
Thanks @Gina and co for making it possible 👏
