Swiss scientists have found a simple, low-energy way to recycle acrylic glass into brand-new material.

Researchers at ETH Zurich developed a method that breaks down acrylic glass, known by the brand name Plexiglas, recovering up to 98 percent of it as pure building blocks.

The process uses a single inexpensive chemical, needs no solvents, and runs at about half the heat of previous methods.

Even dyed or impure acrylic produced material good enough to make new products matching the quality of virgin plastic.

Because it works with existing equipment, companies wouldn’t need costly overhauls to adopt it.

Indonesia has halted what was called the world’s largest deforestation project, sparing about 4 million acres.

The government had planned to clear rainforest, swamps, and peatlands on Borneo and in South Papua for rice and sugar plantations.

But the country hit its rice self-sufficiency goal about three years early thanks to better crop varieties, incentives, and fertilizer subsidies.

Officials agreed that any future farming expansion will happen on the roughly 28 million acres of land that’s already degraded.

The decision especially protects South Papua’s peatlands, which store far more carbon than rainforest.

The project had faced fierce opposition from international environmental groups, local activists, and Indigenous communities.

Environmental group Mighty Earth called it a globally significant decision and pledged to help local communities heal the roughly 90,000 acres already cleared.
