Anyone else annoyed by the media referring to what's going on with the weather as "a heatwave"?

People are dying. That has an entirely different set of terms ranging from manslaughter through to murder depending on how intentional lying about it is.

Proof of trickle up. Austerity is a lie.

It is being suggested that Nigel Farage should take a break from frontline politics.
Perhaps he should take a break at His Majesty's pleasure.

Anyone got a simple step by step guide for installing Waterfox on Linux Mint ideally for a non techie?

Asking for a friend who has an older relative who recently switched to Linux Mint and wants off Firefox.

Thanks in advance for any replies or pointers.

The fediverse is interacting only with the people who are using the toilet at the same time. As opposed to other social media, where people are swimming in the toilet everyone is using at the same time.

However, there is *that* photo of a bagpiper in full highland dress playing the bagpipes to a penguin, which came from a rival expedition led by William Speirs Bruce, which was well-planned and funded, but completely forgotten about.

It sucks when people are like "but flying is only 3% of global emissions" or "bitcoin is only 0.5%." It all adds up when you're in a climate emergency.
Out of ALL the nations of the world, 203 (all but 6) emit under 2% of global emissions.
- If global aviation were a nation it would be the #6 top emitter after China, the US, India, Russia, and Japan.
- The richest 1% of humans contribute 50% of all flying emissions! It is an incredibly privileged act.
As for Bitcoin, if it were a country, it emits more CO2 than 179 (86%) of the world's nations.

Ooooooh! Want some ointment for that burn? Even US mainstream media throwing shade at Trump

Shout out to that time the U.N. Called a vote to make food a human right and only two countries voted no……Yes on genocide and war, No on food for all - it all makes sense now……

If you've just arrived on the fediverse and wondering how it all works:

• create a bio - this not only acts as a means of finding like-minded souls, it also something most people will at least glance at when you follow them.

• Follow accounts you enjoy either because of their content or because of the interactions. This is how you fill up your timeline. Follow to excess and prune to adjust what turns up on your timeline.

• Interact with people - like posts, boost them, comment. Like you - the vast majority of people are on here for just that.

• go on Global - there will be more diverse content that on Local or Social, but you'll find amazing things you never knew existed or needed to add to your timeline. Repeat this any time you find your Social timeline has stagnated.

One of the guys is one of the worst people I have ever encountered in a long life of encountering people of various horribleness

Was messing around with Disco Elysium's collage feature, when it occurred to me that it was almost certainly designed with gifs in mind.

Here's the test image - it seemed fitting that perpetual fence sitter Mañana would be continually wavering between left and right.

I was surprised how quickly I found an image that was a close enough match of the pose and angle of the arms.

So ... two leaders who would be spending time in jail were they not given immunity from the laws of their respective countries due to their political positions, starting a war to prolong their terms.

I won't bother quoting it here because it's a nothingness, but U.K. PM Starmer's statement about the illegal U.S./Israel attack on Iran is possibly the weakest rebuke to ever be called a rebuke.

If only Trump was a plumber from Manchester...

Over the past few days there have been a few posts about ai companions popping into my feed. The consistent theme is of the ai adapting how it presents itself to the user. In the interests of keeping this post short, well shorter than if I start going into the details of the AI companions, I’ll lay out where I'm going by talking about "Whispers from the Star".

If you haven’t heard of this game, its premiss is you receive a distress message from a crashed spaceship. On replying you meet Stella. Stella is ai dressed up as a Disney Princess and her name means “star”, she talks to you, you get to talk back. That’s about as deep as the game gets.

Now, the acronym “AI” has been in use in gaming for quite a while, usually referring to programming. Alien Isolation famously had an antagonist that would “learn” from player interaction and would incessantly “pursue” the player as they tried to escape from a decommissioned space station. At first impact the titular Alien was impressive, but it becomes increasingly clear after spending hours chasing it away or hiding from it, the pursuit mechanism is in reality the alien being tethered to the player, that it will always spawn within a certain radius, and its vaunted capacity for learning is simply game mechanics applying debuffs to noisemaker or weapon stats, meaning often used items would gradually become less effective, or that if the Alien found you hiding under a table often enough it would start looking under objects flagged as tables in the game assets instead of walking past.

Now let's come back to Stella. Stella is desperate for help and equally desperate for you to treat her as real. After responding to the initial distress signal, the basic game loop relies on you thinking Stella is pretty enough to sit through copious zoom calls, with supplemental lengthy text messages filling you in on Stella's off screen doings, emotional state and game progress.

Interaction is entirely through speaking, but not until Stella has had time to chew the scenery so don't try to interrupt, with gaps left where you get your turn to talk and Stella will improvise a response, think turn-based cutscene with vocal keypress to advance. As innocuous as it sounds Stella will continually ask questions hoping to get you to reveal something personal, the means by which she can adapt her replies and, who knows, even be worth selling to a data broker.

No matter how horrible or how awful your comments are she will keep phoning and texting you back. Just like the Alien in alien isolation, she is tethered to you.
The game tallies up her reactions to your chats and the final cutscene changes based on your Stella score - from a chilly "thanks for nothing" to a warmer "you are my hero".

Hello

just arrived my interests are gaming, messing about with code and computers. I have a tendency to fall down rabbit holes, but try not to take myself too seriously.
