I’m sad to say I’ve recently joined the “unexpectedly been made redundant” gang 😢
So I’m now looking for a new role where I can bring my 20+ years of frontend dev experience to a team where things like user experience, design and accessibility are valued and who still care about the 'craft' of building good things for the web.
If anyone knows of any teams who fit that criteria and are currently hiring I would greatly appreciate a heads up 🙏
I’m trying to put together a list of fun little web-based word/number games that work well on mobile, such as:
https://wafflegame.net
https://tiledwords.com
https://squares.org
https://numbercrunch.fun
Can anyone recommend any other puzzles like the ones above?
Mostly looking for games made by indie devs over those on paywalled sites.
(Boosts for this post would be much appreciated 😀)
I made Lookbook when I was *very* new to Ruby and I'm super-self conscious about how bad the Ruby in it is.
So I'm really enjoying writing fresh new code... that I can hate just as much in three years time 🙄
And on a related note over Christmas I started a project to implement a new parser-analyzer engine for Lookbook:
https://github.com/lookbook-hq/booklet
Still very early days (it's very much *not* ready for public use yet) but I'm excited about its potential, both as a more flexible, extendable, sane(!) foundation for Lookbook and as something that will hopefully make building things like Murilo's visual tester tool much more straightforward.
Finally got around to taking a proper look at this visual regression tester for Lookbook:
https://github.com/muriloime/lookbook_visual_tester
It's very cool! It makes me so happy when people take time to build stuff like this that extends the capabilities of Lookbook.
And the chap that made it (Murilo) has some interesting ideas for other Lookbook-related tools too. Love it :)
Like free pizza and/or drinks? 🍕☕️🍺
Live in or near Brighton? ☀️🏳️🌈
Then come along to the Brighton Ruby meetup next Tuesday (7th Oct)!
The only catch is that you'll have to listen to me ramble on a bit about some of the lessons I've learned while building an open source Rails engine (Lookbook) as a relative Ruby n00b. But I'll try and keep that bit as short as possible to maximise pizza and drinks time 🙂
This is Brighton, U.K. where a far right protest was met with a counter protest.
And when I say far right protest it was 4 blokes, and when I say counter protest it was hundreds and hundreds of people.
You have to look closely, but the 4 blokes are on the left hand picture, hiding behind the protective ring of police who are, suddenly, their best friends now.
Due to some difficult family stuff going on I've not had much time to spend on Lookbook recently. But seeing this tweet: https://twitter.com/_swanson/status/1706783558306582919 (and the lovely comments) really made my day and has made me feel very motivated to try and carve out a bit more time for it as things calm down.
Wow - I realise I'm probably late to this but https://moderncss.dev is **very** good. The level of detail in the posts and the clarity of explanation is fantastic.
I've grown pretty weary of CSS over the last few years but this is making me excited about learning new stuff again! 🤩
Huge kudos @5t3ph and thanks for all the work you've put in on this.
Lookbook v2.0 is (finally) out of beta! 🥳
https://lookbook.build - new homepage and docs too.
I'm terrible at actually pulling the trigger on releases and this is looong overdue so it feels great to have it out in the wild properly at last.
Just time to catch my breath and then get on with figuring out where the next priorities lie :-)
Lookbook v2.0.0.rc.1 was released yesterday! 🎉
Just a couple of minor bug fixes in this one. Unless I hear of any major issues in the next day or two I'll be (finally!) releasing v2.0 properly towards the end of the week.
I had to pull my big boy pants on and commit to a release date because @andycroll was mocking me yesterday (nicely) for the number of betas I've put out. He may have a point 😜

Has anyone got any tips/resources on good patterns for testing a Rails engine gem against a number of different Rails dummy apps and/or multiple different configuration files?
Not against different Ruby/Rails versions - I've got that covered. It's running tests against different setups (some tests to run on all setups, some specific to each setup) that I'd really like to find some guidance or even just good examples of.
Any pointers would be much appreciated :-)
@joeldrapper I'll add a few more 'real world' Phlex components to the demo site when I have a bit more time and try to flesh out the docs around Phlex components a bit too.
I'm very excited about having Phlex support in Lookbook now :-)
Hey @joeldrapper - just to let you know that I've finally released a first beta of Lookbook v2.0 which includes first-class support for previewing Phlex components (in addition to ViewComponents & ActionView partials).
The new docs still need some work but should give you a feel for how it works: https://v2.lookbook.build/
And there is a super basic example of a Phlex component in the new demo site here: https://v2-demo.lookbook.build/lookbook/inspect/phlex_example/default
This is my first venture back onto social media since I shut the door on it all back in 2017. I’m genuinely terrified.
