feels to me like the ai bubble will never burst in the useful way (i.e. you can buy RAM again, all the annoying shit stops) because what underlies the speculative aspect is that it's the future the bosses want, so they'll keep investing in it.

"what the law is" = a question we wait for judges to decide, a stultifying question for democracy
"what we want our future to be" = the real question people are too cowed to ask
for decades before AI was the buzzword tech cos have put themselves between people and information, between people and art, and contributed as little as possible, often nothing, to reporting or creation. we have to decide what a better way is and make laws toward that.
it's probably good for people to consume media they don't have TOTAL control over for all sorts of obvious reasons but i don't think "the algorithm" is doing that in a helpful way so... yeah...

when people state a preference for control over their social media they're not saying they'd consume more if it was designed as they'd like... any more than an alcoholic or compulsive gambler is saying they'd consume more if the product didn't take away control of their facilities.
the "stated" and "revealed" preferences here are speaking to completely different kinds of preferences!

i don't think this means we collectively have a preference, revealed or otherwise, for indoor smoking. i don't think very many people have a preference, revealed or otherwise, for the ever-more-frictionless, ever-more-overstimulating gambling machines. i don't think that we collectively have a preference, revealed or otherwise, to spend the money that we do gambling, nor for the brunt of that cost to fall on an unfortunate group that compulsively gambles.

to be sure: i'm positive i couldn't come up with a "better" scheme than this. if i built a casino hotel themed around my aesthetic preferences on the vegas strip (working title "walden pond casino resort") the obvious move would be to have the exact same kind of casino floor with the same garish machines as all the others, similarly situated. even banning smoking would surely be unjustifiable on the numbers -- it would turn away more gambling business than it would attract.

i don't think revealed preference is quite the right frame here.
a few months ago i stayed in a las vegas casino hotel for the first time. the hotel operators have obviously found that, at least in their particular situation, the optimal way to make money is to make everyone walk through a noisy, overstimulating floor of fully-automated gambling machines, that smells like stale cigarette smoke on the way to and from their rooms every time
