The lessons from Brazil and Serbia?
Don't concede one inch of ground to the far right.
Don't appease.
Don't triangulate.
Don't grovel.
Don't say they have "legitimate concerns".
Mobilise your base, and fight them with all the democratic means at your disposal.

Growing up in Europe, I saw an American president telling the Soviet leader to “tear down this wall”. Because he wanted the people of East Germany to join the free world.

The current US president builds walls, and he wants East Ukraine to just give up and accept Russian rule.

On November 3, Americans have the chance to change course and relight the torch of the Statue of Liberty, to show the world that America stands for freedom.

It may be the last chance.

Make it count.

Dear fedi I'm livid. An acquaintance of mine almost finished college and after doing an *unpaid* six months internship was offered a follow-up contract for less than 500€ a month. If you wonder why European young people are mad that's pretty much why.

I'll be doing anything in my power to make sure he'll never work there so if you have an opening or internship for a young person starting his career let me know.

He'll finish the equivalent of a bachelor in computer science in May next year, has done some six months of hands-on work in security and is one hell of a worker. I can personally vouch for him. He's based in Italy and can do both in-person and remote work, and might be able to relocate to the NL and possibly the UK if need be.

Boosts appreciated.

Like Lula, I'm also a man who cries. And I've lost count of how many times I've cried since Saturday, especially after the wonderful news.

I think it's important to share this in a world where unhealthy ideals of masculinity are so often promoted, particularly by far-right extremists, but certainly not only by them.

Men cry. And there's nothing wrong with showing our emotions.

i'll do another proper announcement post later around primetime but the no AI notice with cute fox is up on itch now: https://eniko.itch.io/cute-fox-no-ai-notice

Good job Brazil and Serbia. Perhaps the US of A can learn something.

Fantastic news to start the week: Putin's guy in Serbia, the corrupt President Aleksandar Vucic, has lost the general election, and the student's movement has won on an agenda of ending the corruption.

May every American feel inspired. ♥️

The election in Serbia is a win for democracy. The students' list very intentionally ran on one message: against the Vučić government, against corruption, for accountability. They tried to avoid having a commitment on any other issue: no commitment for or against the EU, for or against Russia, for or against Lithium exports. They defied having a leader, very intentionally.

They stand for basic values: for democracy, for the freedoms of speech, of press, of research and education, for a separation of powers. This was enough to carry an election, fortunately, but is it enough to form a government and lead a country?

Vučić was the minister of information in the Serbia of Milošević. I wouldn't be surprised if Vučić conceded quickly to position himself to run for president before the year is over. This isn't over.

The hard part is starting. Rebuilding democratic structures, reinstating press freedom, gaining agreements on what to do, not just on what to be against. All the best!

There’s an old story about a child picking up starfish that have washed up on the beach and putting them back in the ocean. A passerby points out this won’t matter, because there are thousands of them. The kid holds one up and says, “Well, it matters to this one.”

I grow tired of arguing with people on the internet who won’t save any starfish if we can’t save them all. Who willfully conflate “This won’t solve everything” with “This changes nothing.”

(This post is not actually about starfish.)

In #Munich, you might see (and hear, feel) this weird machine, making weird vibration and sound sweeps. This is part of the Giga-M project. Its goal is to create a detailed 3D map of the underground in Munich and surrounding areas (in total 1100 square kilometres) that will be made available as #OpenData to assist in planning geothermic plants. Switching away from fossil fuel for heating. Impressive!

Earlier in October, Finnish authorities ordered Google’s affiliate data center developer
Tuike Finland Oy to immediately suspend the illegal cuttingof some 1,300 acres of forest.

The tech giant was given a week to draft a report explaining its actions,
which soon became a flashpoint for Europe’s growing outrage over the data center boom.

New reporting by the Guardian shed fresh light on the impacts of Google’s deforestation.

After the 1,300 acres of pristine boreal forests were reduced to tracts of mud and stumps,
fauna which once called the woods home has been forced to vacate.

In the felling-site near the Finnish village of Otanmäki,
the ensuing loss of prey has forced packs of wolves to search for food elsewhere:
-- nearby villages.

“We had wolves coming into the village because all the wild animals moved out of the forest,” 53-year-old Otanmäki resident Anni Ranta told the Guardian.
“They fled.”
