There are two old republicans on the New York City subway talking about Talarico’s mental health. They are some of the most vile people I have experienced in such close proximity in a long time. She just yelled at him for not looking at her while he’s talking but they’re sitting next to each other and he’s clearly disabled and can’t move his neck. But his wife doesn’t care.
Long line for early voting on the UES in manhattan today. #vote

It's too easy to start doomscrolling with the constant stream of terrible things happening on your phone. So I encourage you all to put your phones down, go outside, and see that terrible things are happening out there too.

"It is the duty of the poor to support and sustain the rich in their power and idleness. In doing so, they have to work before the laws' majestic equality, which forbids rich and poor alike to sleep under bridges, beg in the streets and steal loaves of bread."

“The situation at Palisades is that you have a power plant operator newbie in Holtec trying to restart a nuclear reactor, and they may be under a lot of financial and political pressure to get this done speedily,” said Allison Macfarlane, who served as NRC chair from 2012 to 2014.
“The ‘chilled work environment’ warning issued by the NRC raises concerns that staff don’t feel like they can speak up to raise safety concerns and prevent accidents,” she added. “That perhaps reflects the new culture sweeping through part of the industry — move fast and break things. But to ensure safety, nuclear needs a culture based on going slowly and carefully.”

I evangelize Moka pots to everyone, so here comes...
Get a Moka pot. Really good coffee, a fabulous history, some wonderful physics (I did my PhD on the flow of water through ̶c̶o̶f̶f̶e̶e̶ ̶g̶r̶o̶u̶n̶d̶s̶ sand). The equipment is pretty low cost, and durable enough to last two lifetimes. Simple to use.
