Happy birthday to the #EU 🇪🇺🥳

Happy #Halloween Fedi!

Happy Birthday to the #UnitedNations 🥳

(I only found out about this today)

Ok, I'm a dunce, why is everyone meming about the number four?

Edit: Idrk what hashtags to use here.

I had a good laugh at this

#scotland

Well, that's Part One of the Clacton saga done with, but as Binface said, we're almost certainly getting a Part Two once that inquiry is done.

I'm sorry but wtf is "exclusive whatsapp customer service"?

This is just me spitballing here but I think one of the reasons this decade feels so miserable is the lack of hope for the future. Things aren't just bad, they are actively getting worse in several catastrophic ways. At least before covid you could comfort yourself with "the future will be better".

Study finds that sky is blue

Sir Jonathon Porritt, advisor to King Charles III for 30 years before he was crowned, was arrested under the UK Terrorism Act outside Westminster Magistrates Court on Thursday 30th July.
As police escorted him away he said “I am a supporter of Palestine Action. Trying to save lives is not terrorism. Exposing this Governments complicity in genocide is not terrorism.”

The video has amassed millions of views on social media, with political and media figures outraged at the arrests of Sir Jonathon alongside 152 other peaceful protesters. They had been at the court because their names were listed for court hearings for 2025 “terrorism” arrests after holding pieces of paper in Parliament Square to oppose the proscription of direct action group Palestine Action.
Saving lives is not terrorism.

Please share, as the UK government really, really doesn't want people to see this.

Just felt like reminding people how unrepresentative the last election was for no particular reason.

And keep in mind that this is before factoring in the people who are so fed up with the system that they didn't vote at all.

This is a bit random but can we switch to "Bellatrix" (plural "Bellatrices" with a hard c) instead of "woman warrior"/"woman soldier"? Those terms have always come off as weird and clunky to me.

And for consistencies sake us guys should use "Bellator"

This really annoys me:

MoTHER
FaTHER
BroTHER
SisTER
DaughTER
Son

WHY IS SON DIFFERENT!?

Bit of #trivia for you:

The similarities between the words "Male" and "Female" are actually just a coincidence. "Male" comes from the Latin "Masculus" (hence "Masculine") and "Female" ultimately comes from a Proto-Indo-European word that means "to suck" (I'm trying not to think too hard about why)

There'll probably be three people tops who get use out of this but the opposite of Agnatic (male-only succession/inheritance) is Enatic (female-only succession/inheritance). Cognatic means that gender is irrelevant.

@CountBinface If you are elected as Member of Parliament for Clacton, when can we expect to see that bloody hand dryer get moved?

The reason I bring this up now is that the government could, in theory, just refuse to do the appointment. Realistically of course this whole thing is usually a formality, the last time someone was refused was in the 1840's. Buut Ed Davey has suggested it in light of #Farage 's recent announcement.

It'll probably come to nothing but I figured I'd share this just in case.

(I've copied Davey's words into the alt text in case anyone needs or prefers that for whatever reason)

Just want to share one of the House of Commons's weird old technicalities because there's a very small chance it might be about to become relevant.

Technically speaking, resigning from the House of Commons is impossible. You just can't, it's not a thing. MP's get around this by being appointed to one of two very old and defunct which come with the condition that you aren't allowed to be an MP while holding them. If you're appointed to them, you cease to be an MP.
