I guess we don't have to wait for official announcement from core #FreeBSD team. It also explains why they wait so long with this.

I am so disappointed 😮‍💨 But not surprised at all.

What is the source of this chart ?

Don't mind me, just verifying my archival backups.

You like Signal for it's outstanding #confidentiality? Fine!

You like Threema, since it's safe, it's from #Switzerland, and #ElsbethSigmund as #Heidi was your #childhoodCrush? Great!

You like Whatsapp, because your friends are there? I don't blame you!

Sometimes you have to read the #phoronix comments just to see the stupid takes

You have to understand that discovering that #Linux and every bit of critical #opensource software (#Firefox, #libreoffice) have been slopped is like after finally ditching cars for public transport you discover that it’s been bought out by by a combination of private equity, EA, Nēstle, Monsanto, CocaCola, _and_ Lockheed Martin, whereupon they fired every qualified driver and replaced them with an Uber-like gig economy where your train driver today is Gareth who once played some weird Japanese train game on a PS2 emulator one time but has an “Outstanding” 97.6% rating.

I just wanted to get somewhere and get stuff done. This isn’t my fight, this isn’t my day job. I already did my part by ditching Windows and now you want me to sort out your problem you so utterly failed to prevent when you breathlessly announced the partnership as “Strengthening the Community”.

Fuck you and the rent economy you rode in on, I’m not your goddamned saviour and I certainly don’t contribute to fashtech, which you now are.

My wife has ~25 years worth of photos "trapped" in the proprietary Apple Photos app on her Mac.

I've got the Mac currently doing an "Export to Original" to get the files out of the app's directory structure and restoring filenames and timestamps back to the photo files.

~23k/170GB of photos and it has been grinding for over six hours when writing to local storage (M1 Mac Mini). So slooooooow. What a pita.

I remember when the Photos app "originals" directory retained the original timestamp and file names, When was that? Ten years ago? So quaint.

I'll upload the images to Immich in the morning I guess. It's after midnight here.

Am I the first person ever to run a Bourne shell on a Commodore 64 I wonder.

A 1MHz 6502 sucks at disk I/O, sucks at copying memory and sucks at running C code, especially when the C code has to be optimized for space not speed. But it works.

I have plans for REU support which I think will make it much much faster assuming i can get away with a few tricks and the timing doesn't break anything.

Had to use a non-hardened browser to interact with muggle websites this week and my usual fallback is the chromium based browser, Vivaldi. Sometimes I'll use ungoogled Chromium as well.

Normally when using these browsers for the first time in many weeks, I forget that they don't respect the middle button paste buffer in the URL bar, or anywhere I guess. Today I was annoyed enough to see if I can find a work around.

As it turns out it's a GTK gsetting:

gsettings get org.gnome.desktop.interface gtk-enable-primary-paste

If that returns false then do a:

gsettings set org.gnome.desktop.interface gtk-enable-primary-paste true

Now you can middle click paste in Chromium based browsers!

For the uncertain, this works regardless of whether you are running a GTK based desktop or not (i.e. do this if you are running Plasma, LXQt, CoW, whatever also).

Gee, what am I going to do with myself for the rest of the day now?

I've released CoW-0.4:

https://codeberg.org/cow-wm/cow/releases/tag/0.4

This release has a number of fixes and features in ir, the notable one being container support.

Thanks to all who've helped with this release!

Any questions, come and join us in #cow-wayland on irc.libera.chat

What is CoW? It's a window manager running on top of the River compositor.

I'm just saying why rule out options for improvement? 🤷‍♀️ 😂

#macOS #wayland #xquartz #river #wm

For my sins, I sometimes have to use a MacBook, and for X11, Xquartz has been a god-sent as it allows me to run an X11 WM and have it appear on MacOS.

But there isn't an equivalent of that for wayland. So I've started to write one. Only this one is based on River's protocols. You can see a screenshot of it attached.

What this means is that any WM which uses #river as its compositor should work with this, assuming it can be ported to #macOS

Specifically I'm referring to the ability if having the wayland compositor render its windows as the WM intended.

It's still a WIP, but things look promising thus far. The core of it is writen in Rust, which is a language I've been wanting to try. The Apple-specific "shim" which allows windows to appear non-natively is written in Objective-C.

I suck at both languages, so I suspect many errors, but so far, I'm liking the progress I'm making...

I'll try and get this code published over the weekend, or early next week.

I've been chipping away at this for many months, so it'll be incomplete. But I do have some XWayland support already working, hence the #xterm screenshot.

My position is: PHP is excellent, and has been excellent for a very long time.

Open, easy and accessible to not just learn and read but tinker with, it's not a ridiculous quasi-proprietary labor-arbitrage exercise disguised as a toolchain that you need a contraption of a CI/CD pipeline to deploy and it works.

There might be better choices for professionals with green-field pro needs, but "one small, discoverable step up from HTML you can deploy right out of your VCS or editor"... that's a lot.
