Dear fedi I'm livid. An acquaintance of mine almost finished college and after doing an *unpaid* six months internship was offered a follow-up contract for less than 500€ a month. If you wonder why European young people are mad that's pretty much why.
I'll be doing anything in my power to make sure he'll never work there so if you have an opening or internship for a young person starting his career let me know.
He'll finish the equivalent of a bachelor in computer science in May next year, has done some six months of hands-on work in security and is one hell of a worker. I can personally vouch for him. He's based in Italy and can do both in-person and remote work, and might be able to relocate to the NL and possibly the UK if need be.
Boosts appreciated.
My @torontostar column: Today we get to decide our most direct kind of government. Your vote will decide things like street sweeping frequency, the wait for dead raccoon pick-up, and whether a washroom door is locked when you need it
So don’t miss your chance — vote
If you don't #Vote don't be surprised that your going #OffACliff

I have said before that I am disappointed at Americans who say “but I didn’t vote for Trump, what he does is not my fault” because you’re not actively doing anything to demonstrate your dislike of this administration and how it’s affecting others, like us in Canada
Brazil saw the imminent risk of electing a Trump ally, and Brazilian people spent TWO ENTIRE WEEKS flooding their capitals with demonstrations, pretty much every single day - I’m not joking. We’re talking millions and millions of people, you have to Google the images to believe how many people were involved, all dressed in red (the color of the Workers’ Party)
Some Federal Deputy / left ally took over social media and would do livestreams every single day, at some point got sick and spent a day in ICU where he did not stop livestreaming (!), and his social media channel to organize the demonstrations got 10 million followers.
Demonstrations everywhere, people dressed in red everywhere, celebrities showing their support for Lula, the Workers Party leader everywhere.
And that’s how, last night, they turned the tide and defeated Trump’s ally.
Maybe Americans should learn from this if you want things to change.
You know, you can do it too. You just need to start it.
The Great Fuckoffening has begun
The koalas have realised this and are asking you: On which side are you on?

As Data centers devastate our communities, we need to vote for politicians who will keep them in check (not accept their campaign donations). I've compiled a ballot of candidates who are running on a platform to properly regulate and stop data center expansion. Check it out here & save this ballot for when you vote:

As a blind person, I always had to bug someone if I want to change bios settings. However, using an HDMI-to-USB-C video capture card, I was able to update the BIOS on my computer and change a bunch of settings with Codex. I told it what I wanted to do, and it guided me through all the menus by telling me how many times to press each arrow key and which keys to press. It was like having a very knowledgeable and endlessly patient sighted person helping me. Thanks @jcsteh for the tip! #LLM #AI
QR codes are everywhere now and they have built-in error correction, which is a fancy way of saying they come with backup data. A scanner can still read the code even if about 30% of it is damaged, smudged or covered up. Now the scary part: Scammers love QR codes. They paste fake QR stickers over real ones on parking meters and signs. Before you scan, make sure it’s not some sticker slapped on. After you scan, read the web address before you tap or pay.

EFF says Canadians are running out of time to oppose #BillC22
see petition below
this bill in #Canada is crazy. it could force digital services to build surveillance capabilities and retain metadata
OK
you can't control what governments demand from platforms
BUT
you CAN encrypt your text and files yourself before they reach platforms = messages/files that are handed over are unreadable

Don't be fooled by Susan Collin's claims she isn't aligned with Trump's tariffs
"A nonpartisan analysis by CQ Roll Call found that Collins voted in line with President Donald Trump's position about 94.6% of the time in 2025, making the claim that she supported him 95% of the time largely accurate"

I didn't realize 94% of the world’s ~254,000 breeding Common loon pairs reside in Canada.
New Common loon research uncovers a widespread decline and calls for action.
Dental implants can hijack your immune system, scientists discover
Researchers have uncovered a surprising reason dental implant infections often resist antibiotics: the implants themselves can contribute to the problem. Bacteria corrode titanium implants, releasing microscopic particles that hijack immune cells, trigger destructive inflammation, and accelerate jawbone loss.
