I looked around one day and realised every part of the furry fandom is monetised.

It was some vague future problem I was worried about ‘later on’, but I think my nightmare has already happened, quietly. Capitalism has eaten the furry fandom.

Every furry artist and streamer wants to ‘build a community’, but nearly all of them are doing it to chase financial gain and stability. Every effort made leads to a product. Shirts, hats, makeship plush.

Fan art for disney, pokemon and other large companies creations outsell original works by such a wide margin that artists feel like they have to draw fan art to make stuff that sells.

At some point ‘Keep furry weird’ drowned in a sea of slick, cool merch and people turning their personality into a brand.

Yeah they’re on by default but you can remove them in settings>decorations>customisation>Lock-screen>news&weather then just remove all log-in widgets - but don’t forget to untick ‘show me personalised log in tips’ in privacy>add-ons>convenience or windows will still collect your login location and use it for targeted advertisement.

I have a mastodon question for people more into activitypub than I am:

Is there any project where you can host your own instance of something that's *like* old deviantart, but also activitypub compatible?

So like, the ability to follow and be followed, plus uploading images, but also a customisable gallery of those images, and customisable homepage for users?

About the Soundcloud secret TOS change (and every other company that has changed their TOS without consent so far)

Where does it stop? The argument is ‘well the TOS specifies that the company can change the terms at any time, and you consented to that’

Could a service just change the TOS retroactively and say ‘by agreeing to these terms you grant our company full and irrevocable power of attorney’? Are there any rules to say you can’t do this?

That sounds silly, but remember WOTC tried to retroactively grant themselves full commercial licences to every piece of fan art / creative writing / characters created for DnD not too long ago

I learned about the hormone Amylin today, it’s a hormone that has to do with feeling satiated after eating, slowing digestion and glucagon release, so it shares a lot in common with ozempic/GLP-1

Where does amylin come from? From beta cells - the same ones that make insulin, and the same ones your immune system destroys if you have type 1 diabetes like me.

At no point in my diabetes education did anybody tell me about amylin - or that just having diabetes made you hungrier and messed with feeling full after a meal, so I thought I’d share what I learned today. :floofHappy:

Robot dreams (2023) short review

A lonely dog builds a robot in 1980's NYC - they quickly become close, but are then suddenly separated.

This movie is visually very pretty, it has many fun character designs and the background work is vibrant, the spaces in the city really feel like spaces where these characters live.

There's no dialogue at all, but the sound and music are both done very well.

The separation plot point is necessary from a storytelling perspective, but it does feel a bit contrived, that maybe dog gives up a little too easily around this point, despite remaining obsessed with reuniting.

Do be aware that there's body horror in this film, as is annoyingly common in movies with robots.

This is a solid movie, the ending is not what I expected, and that's okay - not every movie needs the happiest/best scenario ending.

This is a bittersweet movie about loneliness and life. It's different, and visually appealing. I like it!
