People do not like me. They like how I try to be – kind, sincere, and sometimes funny.

I believe everyone has a role and a responsibility to make the world a better place. Because the alternative is for us to help make the world a worse place, or to stand by and do nothing.

– Maya Lin in #AnnaRussell "Great Women’s Speeches" 2021

Life is sweeter when you are.

from "Descendants: The Rise of Red" 2024 #JoshCumbee

The universe is expanding and everything will eventually be so far away from everything else that nothing will be able to “see” anything else anymore. Which leaves me with an awesome responsibility — to see, with awareness, as much as I can, as long as I can. To make, as much as I can, sense of it. To be as good as I can be. To spread goodness as fast as I can so that if anything were to be remembered in the coming void it would be: “Life was good, we did the best we could.” Life is good, do the best you can.

Come, sit, & let’s have tea with our living ancestors as we share untold histories of the city we call home.
This intergenerational storytelling exchange invites young people to bring an elder they admire (a grandparent, an aunt, a neighbour, a mentor) & sit down together to talk over tea.
Drawing on South Africa’s long tradition of oral storytelling, the workshop creates a structured but intimate space for the kinds of intergenerational conversations that don’t usually happen in the rush of everyday life.
This is an event about archiving the ordinary. The everyday memories, domestic rituals, & personal histories that don’t make it into the history books, but that are the real texture of this city.
Tea and snacks will be provided
🎟️ Tickets: openbookfestival.co.za/festival-programme/ (Note: Each ticket admits two people, because the idea is for you to bring someone from another generation with you. Space is limited!)

[7 of 7] No amount of charity can justify or cover up abuse of young girls. Moral responsibility can't be bought. (Grok 3)

[6 of 7] Philanthropy doesn't absolve anyone of harming vulnerable young people. We should hold powerful men accountable for their actions, regardless of their charitable giving. (Grok 2)
