😬 There's a lot to like about Southern California, but having to watch the wind conditions and emergency services announcements to know if it's time to bail while your earthly belongings go up in smoke is not great for one's blood pressure.

So, in a quest to understand how we got... gestures vaguely at everything ...here, I'm reading Elliot Rodger's manifesto. Y'know, the incel spree killer.

It's fucking wild, yo. Like, hard to get through. Don't read this crap. It's a long, LONG diatribe about his childhood, written in the style of someone who mistakenly considers himself a writer.

But... there are parts where your heart kinda breaks for this kid. It's like he was hyper self-conscious without even a hint of self-awareness.

The other day the temperature was around 55° Fahrenheit / 13° Celsius / 286 Kelvin, and today we were at 307 Kelvin. This weather makes no god damn sense.

Huh. Y'know... I was looking at review videos for a thing the other day, and it was frustrating to see all these slop videos that are actually just ads thinly disguised as reviews. HOWEVER! I found a really good heuristic to sort bad reviews from useful ones.

Is the reviewer not conventionally attractive, but kind of a hot mess? That's a strong indicator in favor of the review having been made by a real person.

Real people are not camera-ready.

It's incredible, though, how the first person in the house to run to me when I fell and check if I was okay was the dog. (Yes she's people, have you met a dog?!) She's snuggled up beside me right now; obviously she recognizes that her human packmate is very clumsy and needs close supervision.

Imagine this world if people were more like dogs.

Bodies are bullshit

Slipped on the stairs and hurt my left shoulder and wrist something fierce, like blackout-from-the-pain bad, but haha, that shoulder was already fucked up. It's actually feeling better now. Will be a lot worse in the morning. So it goes.

Gravity is a harsh mistress.

It appears the manatee has become the manator

Knock knock.

Who's there?

Drone strike.

Drone strike who?

Drone strike a datacenter.

Everyone, I have a suggestion: New Skill November.

Anybody who is constantly trying to find a middle ground between personal benefit on the one hand and horrendous ethical and environmental violations on the other while a financial crisis bubbles in the background, is a fence sitter at best. Calling them critical is a ridiculous statement

Y'know... it's impossible to find the full, uncensored video showing the execution of mass murderer and healthcare CEO multimillionaire Brian Thompson online, but the US government intends to livestream the execution of spree killer Nidal Hasan for all to see. Thompson caused orders of magnitude more suffering than Hasan, but he made a few, privileged people unfathomably rich, so he gets treated with dignity.

I guess the lesson here is that mass murder is fine as long as it's profitable?

Omfg for whatever reason I had this impulse today to figure out how to do a pixel-art rendering style in Blender and I think I've gotten pretty close. Trickiest part was figuring out how to do color banding that looks properly 8-bit, and what I landed on was I used the Compositor to separate the image's colors, applied a color ramp to each channel, then recombined them, and it looks legit. Maybe I'll post a video tomorrow.

Many thanks to all the wonderful French people on the fediverse who have given me a reason to brush up on my French and read all the hilariously bugfuck shit that's going on with the student protests.

Like, I'm not really fussed about whether botnik activity is down, up, sideways, or what, I just think Ukraine blowing Russian infrastructure to smithereens is neat.

A thing I dislike about all of blockchain, "AI", and ATProto is when you describe to someone an issue with the technology and they respond by simply explaining to you how it is the technology works. This sometimes leads to circular conversations where you outline a problem, they explain how the technology works, you explain that the problem persists even if you know how the technology works, and they explain how the technology works again
