Just a casual reminder that Germans who “didn’t bother to vote” in 1932 didn’t get a chance again until 1946, after Hitler’s death. — There’s a lesson there.

It’s 1986 and my mother is shouting at me to stop touching the computer, I’m wasting my life.

It’s 2016 and I am fixing mother’s computer, regaling her about the variety of rich opportunities computer touching has given me in my life.

It’s 2026 and I am cursing my mother for ever letting me touch a computer. I have wasted my life.

Early morning for all of us.
My husband had to be at the hospital for a scan so we had to get a move on.
After the scan we had to do a quick turn around to get him to the dentist an hour away.
As few things go as planned...
The person doing his scan screwed up his ileostomy bag so a frantic drive home to clean up and make repairs before the dentist happened.
Yikes.
But back to the start of our day. Summer and I opened the front door to dark clouds.
She insists on wandering the entire property so we were treated to a most amazing rainbow on the flip side of the house.
You just never know.
Today is a mixed bag of easy and not.
Dark and light.
We hope you find the light side of your world today like we did.
Good morning, Mastodon.

I LOVE starting a very stressful day by spilling cheese curds everywhere and then getting an email saying that I have an overdue bill for publication fees for a paper that was published 18 months ago, that was supposed to have a fee waiver, so I never received a first bill. Did they take a page from US medical insurance companies or something? What the fuck. I fucking hate everything about academic publishing.

Long post about religion and far right

My mom had a great friend and when I was born her daughter was basically my very first friend, I'll call her T. T and I were always very close as our parents were constantly hanging out. Even when my parents divorced, this didn't stop my mom and I from being always with them, I went to the same school as T and we saw each other every day. We were besties.

When T was 11, her family moved to a small town, her dad still working in the big city most of the week, which allowed them to live a more comfortable life - big city paycheque and small town lifestyle. We would often drive there on weekends, and their house had an apartment on the second floor where we would stay.

When T was a teenager, her dad had an aggressive cancer. My mom moved mountains, really, to try to help him. My mom is a doctor, and you have no idea of everything I saw my mother doing to try to save his life. We spent the last summer of his life in their home with my mom basically being a support caretaker for the family. He passed not long after and everyone was absolutely devastated.

By around this time T met her boyfriend, a boy from down the street, whose dream was to be in the army and whose family went to church. Like any teen and her first boyfriend, they were inseparable, but the church thing was weird to me. The pastor was always around and so was his wife and his horrible bully kids, "present" but in kind of a controlling way.

I found out that T's mom had gotten pregnant by the pastor and my mom helped her get an abortion (extremely illegal and also very against Christian values) - she "came visit us in the big city" and that was what happened. I'm sure T doesn't know. I don't know how the pregnancy happened, and I don't want to speculate. I only know the pastor was responsible for it, and my mother was extremely angry that she kept going to church after it.

When we finished high school, it was obvious we had gone very different ways

She invited me to be her bridesmaid at her wedding - she was marrying army boy

I couldn't attend her wedding because I had to attend the university entrance exam (I passed with flying colours)

We lost touch for a few years - I met my husband, was busy studying and starting my career, and she was busy with her church, being an army wife and a new mother.

When I got back in touch again, some years later, I was horrified by how far right she had leaned, and so fast. From that sweet friend of mine she was now a person spreading hate and lies as religion. All her life was this picture-perfect "church lady with beautiful family" instagram designed to make her look like a poster girl for the right.

And it made me think about the moment the pastor entered her life when her father died. They saw a girl who was asking herself "why did my father die" and saw an opportunity to groom an entire family.

I sometimes lurk her profile to see how bad it is, and recently both she and her husband both became pastors, and her eldest child is a gospel singer at the church. So from a single event the Christian far right was able to multiply, over the years: my friend T, her mother, and her two children (her boyfriend was the attack vector)

When you see a friend in crisis for something they have no control over and that can be exploited by religion, offer all the support you can - you may be able to save an entire family from being groomed by the far right.

I find this whole story terrifying, especially looking at how my life turned out. My mother divorced, we had a pretty rough number of years, but my life turned out completely different (and awesome) because I didn't have far-right pastors preying on me.

Hawkeye: War isn’t Hell. War is war, and Hell is Hell. And of the two, war is a lot worse.
Father Mulcahy: How do you figure that, Hawkeye?
Hawkeye: Easy, Father. Tell me, who goes to Hell?
Father Mulcahy: Sinners, I believe.
Hawkeye: Exactly. There are no innocent bystanders in Hell. War is chock full of them — little kids, cripples, old ladies. In fact, except for some of the brass, almost everybody involved is an innocent bystander.

We really don't pay school teachers enough.
