All go on the kingston advertised planning applications this week: New retail development (behind repco), the 3rd oval at the twin ovals, and a treetop sauna

Today's tiny moment of geek joy has been discovering that the annoying "TV turns on when rebooting the attached raspberry pi" is that it can be turned back off again using "cec-ctl -d /dev/cec0 --to 0 --standby"

Does anyone make a rack-friendly USB-C PSU that goes straight into a C-13 outlet?

ie, blob with C14 pug on one end, ISB-C outlet on the other. Yes I'm aware that I can get cables. bricks and adaptors but I want something that goes straight into a zero-U vertical PDU

Ohai. New app who dis?
I see @somafm have been busy

Now, why did I think of @avavsystems when I saw this (www.gowansauctions.com.au/auction/357?lot=431461) as an upcoming lot in this weeks auction?

I'm not saying it's been damp recently, but LISTmap (https://maps.thelist.tas.gov.au/listmap/app/list/map) have redefined our lawn as a dam :-/ (top left one is a genuine small dam, larger one is infact the lawn)

@tserong - Have you seen https://ceph.io/en/community/events/2026/ceph-meetup-melbourne/ ?
Not sure if you or any of your storage colleagues are heading to eResearch

While I'm at local shoutouts, Fullers https://fullersbookshop.com.au/about/ are great. Sure they're not the lovely sprawling James Thin (Edinburgh) or John Smiths (Glasgow) I remember from my youth, but they ARE still in business! Give them your custom

*AusPol may be shit on so many fronts, but this is a (tiny) % of income I'm glad they spend

As someone who's in the fortunate position of being able to pay taxes*, I'd like to shout how good the Tasmanian library service is. I can place a free reservation for a book and it'll be waiting for collection at a library of my choosing. Doesn't matter which library across the state had it, it'll come down to my local (or wherever) branch. I suspect Naxos may be as evil as Spotify for artists, but we also get free subs to that and e-magazines.
Compared to the UK libraries they're great

Wow! So I've just picked up an unexpected parcel from postoffice with a @beasts sticker on it. Opened it up to find a signed copy of Gytha Lodge's book inside!

I know these folks have always had a reputation of going above and beyond, but that was really unexpected and not your typical hosting company response.

Ta folks!

In the spirit of a @georgepenney #spotted post: at Keflavík airport a small toddler is testing ALL the footballs in the Fyrire Iceland shop for bounciness while parent is gathering them up and trying to replace them on the shelf.

Dear lazyweb, it's about time I ripped our CD collection (1-200). What's the format of choice these days (and ballpark disk space req) if I'm going to be streaming it around the (mostly wired) home? Playback devices with decent speakers are via pi audio hats (and shairport sync) but i may investigate esp32 + dac + sendspin

Dear ikea, whoever decided that setting a timer (not end of cooking, nor duration of cooking, merely a machine that goes ping after a suitable delay) on your oven requires 5 presses of the function button AND THEN uses the rotary knob to increment IN SECONDS has obviously never thrown stuff in the oven and wanted a rough idea of when to investigate the cake in 45 mins.
After much twizzling i gave up and decided to chuck an album on and figured it'd be about right. #UIFail

Prompted by a post from @bloor (https://bloor.tw/@bloor/116019862318950480), i think PFE (original lancs source) was one of those 'so this is what a good program is like' moments: do one job and do it well. Similar era shout out the developers (and yes it was likely single people) to #PuTTY, Pegasus mail, and VLC (i know the latter has grown somewhat, but at a time of supposedly needing 15 different video player apps, having one that 'Just Worked' regardless of codec was great).

Aha. The waveshare poe hat for pi5 seems to have an aux 12v output. Do I still need transistor + mosfet combo to trigger from GPIO pin, or is that functionality built in?

Dear lazyweb, are there any poe splitters that output both 12 and 5v *at the same time*? Yes i knoe there are ones with switches, but i want feed to a SBC (5v) and a dew heater (12v via switch on SBC) from a single cable.
Id rather not have a chonky 12v out and second 12 to 5 converter.

Boo. Just discovered this #Raspberrypi 4 has a manufacturing fault. annoyngly old so probably out of a warranty fix :-(
