26th Oct 2026. How did you develop your voice?

I learned how to write novels and worked hard at it for fourteen years before anyone offered to publish one of them. Then, when I got three offers in the same month for three different books at three different houses, I worked hard with their various editors and learned loads from them. And then I continued to learn through multiple books for the next fourteen years as a working author. It's a process.

26th Oct 2026. What's something you accomplished this month that you weren't sure if you would be able to?

Getting "back on the bike" after my bad fall downstairs. It's taken me all month to recover enough to sit at my keyboard again and think straight as all that terrible pain finally started to reduce, but I got there.

25th Oct 2026. What's something you accomplished this past week?

My graduation ceremony. Couldn't get to Ireland so celebrated at home with my close family and friends. It was heartwarming.

So... I take a rather different view of what is going on in France.

It seems, coming out onto the streets actually forces some debate in France. Which means, unlike in the UK (Yes, I was on that friggin enormous Rejoin march in London that elicited zero response from the fucking Tory Government) and the US (how many thousands in how many cities?) the French system apparently DOES feel the need to respond to protest.

Like a real democracy

Hidden Breath

I hear the gale sing
of all those lost in silence,
some mourned, others not;
storm winds know the tragedy
of hearts sheltered beneath stone.

wolves roaming into finnish villages after being displaced by google's illegal logging operations... that wasn't in any potential future i expected when i switched search engines back in 1999

More than 400 people are expected to gather outside the United States embassy in London on October 31 in the latest act of mass defiance against the British government’s ban on the #PalestineAction group.

During the initial legal challenge back in 2025, it emerged that Trump and Starmer had spoken by phone twice about Palestine Action in the March of that year. Starmer had requested updates from Police Scotland on the arrests about the damage done to his precious golf course. He briefed Trump regularly and that's why we shall be outside the embassy.

On Halloween Day mass defiance and the mass arrests expected to follow will lay bare the fundamental rights to free expression. I may go for a 'hattrick'

WE SHALL WIN

you can be part of this too.

Bookish Delights: Have you ever read a book where you knew that one of the MCs or SCs would make a good friend of yours IRL?

I've written lots of them. As for reading: yes, a few. Sam Gamgee comes to mind immediately.

23rd Oct 2026. How do you make sure you deliver on your writerly promises?

I'm interpreting this in terms of meeting deadlines, etc. I do meet them. Being reliable for editors and other people whose work depends on receiving mine on time is important to me. Really don't like the idea of letting people down. My health conditions can fluctuate, so I factor that into negotiations.

Out for my walk the other day and I stopped by a small creek that crosses the road for a look-see. After gazing at the mostly stagnant water for a minute I looked up to see this Barred Owl checking me out😆

It was completely nonplussed. It would look down at the water, around the waters edge, behind itself and sometimes me. Left it several minutes later to keep looking for chow without an audience...

22nd Oct 2026. Share a work you found really challenging to read.

The Lord of the Rings. An avid reader of everything I could get my hands on all through childhood, and a young musician with folk-rock leanings and a thing for Maddy Prior, by my mid-teens in the early 1970s when this doorstep came to my attention I was hungry for it. Ate the story up. Struggled with the writing style. Persevered because friends said it was worth it, but bloody hell...

22nd Oct 2026. Share a sentence from your WIP that you're especially proud of.

A main character's opening line from the first of three Wessex Mysteries novels that I co-wrote through two busy and enjoyable years with my dear friend Nimue Brown @Nimue_B, which will be released together in a single big volume when editing is finished:

If a spur-of-the-moment September holiday in Lombardy can be judged on the happiness of toes, then ours was a success.

21st Oct 2026. How do you make your works approachable?

I write what I love for readers who love what I write.

21st Oct 2026. Your MC wakes up with the ability to read minds for 24 hours. Whose thoughts do they most want to hear? Whose thoughts do they least want to hear?

Medb would hate this. She has worked all her life to have a quiet mind, and this would have potential to shatter that. I imagine she would get out on the sea alone in a boat for those 24 hours and breathe the quietness.
