Our lonesome chicken has now become an indoor pet and has learned from the cats to guard the home territory from this vantage point. So far, no intruder chickens have attempted to pass.

As Josh Marshall writes, in that op-ed:

Holy crap, this chart of data from the US Dept. of Commerce is *wild*

construction of data centers is on an increasing trajectory ...

... while construction of nearly everything else (housing, commercial properties, etc) is on a decreasing trajectory

it's a zoomed-in scale on the chart, but this trend would be striking even zoomed out

I was accused of being sensationalist or exaggerating when our 2022 research paper predicted one in 15 visible points in the sky would be a moving satellite. I think maybe we were actually too conservative.

I hate this so very very much.

Me: ugh, modern landmark architecture is just rich people showing off how much money they have. What happened to restrained displays of class and taste?

18th Century Scotland: PINEAPPLES!!!

My best friend's contractor didn't show for work yesterday.

Last night, his brother showed up and knocked on his door.

"My brother was picked up by ICE at his immigration hearing. When he called me, he told me to come to your house and finish the job." They gave him money and told him to go home.

My friend found a lawyer for the contractor last night, but as he said, "I'm not sure if I'm more shaken as an American or as a Jew."

We have to end this nightmare.

"Math 1.0" placed a premium on being the first to solve an open problem, even if the solution was not initially well understood. Now that this goal has been optimized to the point of unsustainability, "Math 2.0" will need to decenter the role of raw problem solving and value mathematical progress more holistically - for instance by elevating the role of exposition, but also that of community building and opening up new directions of study. I believe that AI can contribute positively in all of these directions as well; but it will require more imagination and ambition than the "Math 1.0" mindset of simply pointing one's favorite AI agent at some set of open problems and asking for a solution. And our community will need to explicitly re-evaluate its criteria for education, publication, and career advancement, to reflect the "Math 2.0" era. (4/4)

I don't know a LOT about farming, but I was sure I knew where eggs come from.

Mom: What's with these AIs escaping and hacking people?

Me: You park your car at the top of a hill. You leave a note on the dashboard that says "please be good" and then you pull the parking brake. The car careens down the hill, smashes everything up, and you put out a press release saying "My car ignored my instructions! It hallucinated! It went rogue!" Your insurance company not only believes you, but invests $100 million in your company.

Mom: Jesus Fucking Christ
