Hey, you know those folks who periodically pop up claiming both parties are equally bad and even if voting third party helps Trump win it would just hasten the necessary collapse of neoliberalism?
I have a new answer for them. It's a quote from William L. Shirer's "The Rise and Fall of the Third Reich," which I'm currently reading:
"The cardinal error of the Germans who opposed Nazism was their failure to unite against it. At the crest of their popular strength, in July 1932, the National Socialists had attained but 37 per cent of the vote. But the 63 per cent of the German people who expressed their opposition to Hitler were much too divided and shortsighted to combine against a common danger which they must have known would overwhelm them unless they united, however temporarily, to stamp it out. The Communists, at the behest of Moscow, were committed to the last to the silly idea of first destroying the Social Democrats, the Socialist trade unions and what middle-class democratic forces there were, on the dubious theory that although this would lead to a Nazi regime it would be only temporary and would bring inevitably the collapse of capitalism, after which the Communists would take over and establish the dictatorship of the proletariat. Fascism, in the Bolshevik Marxist view, represented the last stage of a dying capitalism; after that, the Communist deluge!”
That didn't work then, and it won't work now. Politics in a democracy IS compromise, and the lesser of two evils is less evil.
Ah, yes, nothing says "we care" quite like every company you've ever forgotten about letting you know they’ll be closing due to the hurricane. The HOA, the electric company, the insurance folks, the bank you haven't used in years, the city, the county, the gym you quit last January, that café you went to once in 2014, even the local library.
And the pièce de résistance? The follow-up emails announcing they’re open again. Riveting. Wouldn’t want to miss that crucial update. #hurricanehelene
Regarding open discussions:,as @bcantrill said about the #bhyve calls: “Sunlight is the best disinfectant “.

Emerging observations on how lockdown was great for #opensource:
Work from home was blessed as a valid thing
Sci-fi-like casual video conferencing without hesitation around the world is now the norm for some of us, only limited by time zones and languages.
Group video chat is equally familiar and commonplace, with excellent self-policing of audio quality and behavior.
Events are focusing on quality over quantity, complimenting the above.
Basically, the “open source seems to be where drunk guys pinch your butt while mansplaining you” factors were globally nipped in the bud.
Good work everyone!
These are delightful times!

@mwl So… what form should explanations of all this take?
A video? Text? In-line documentation? More conference talks?
@mwl So… the sltk is in my repo for creating zpools…
With just a few command and arguments, you can last our configured RELEASE, STABLE, and CURRENT #FreeBSD systems in minutes and occasionally seconds.
I can only think of #OpenBSD as being the other available “platform” OS that can blast out so much so easily, minus the build options and OpenZFS.
If this collection of primarily-syntax and doesn’t convince you of the benefits of unified OSs, I don’t know what will.
As always, steal my syntax, respecting the copyright was appropriate.

occambsd.sh is close to the src and allows you to create custom/minimal systems, with optional boot image output
propagate.sh allows you to create custom/minimal systems with packages base, with optional boot image output
imagine.sh allows you to image OccamBSD, Propagate, and upstream #FreeBSD, #OmniOS, #Debian, and #RouterOS images, mirroring some, and create Windows images
sideload.sh allows you to push your current FreeBSD configuration to one of the above-generated fresh installations
rc.local.sh allows you to best-effort idempotently configure basic aspects of a system
tl:dr: I never want to see a 1980’s-style installer again
Call For Testing: Major #OccamBSD updates
occambsd.sh - More-consistent syntax
propagate.sh - Propagate PkgBase installs
imagine.sh - Image boot images from the others and upstream
sideload.sh - Push (much of) a #FreeBSD configuration to a new installation
rc.local.sh - Semi-idempotently configure basic aspects of a system
They’re never done, never perfect, but they do exactly what I have envisioned in various ways and given talks about for 20+ years.
