I am so intrigued by Marija Gimbutas (1921-1994) work, I am suggesting you to dig into it, best are some of the podcasts and talks she gave herself. Her point is that the old Europe were peaceful matriarchial societies where all genders were equally appreciated and women were valued and responsible. Her believes were ridiculed for 30 years and recently new evidence backs up some of her research but more must be done to do comparitive studies.
