Relentless AI scrapers pushed DNA Lounge's web hosting bill from $800 to $3,500/month.
That is a $32,000/year cost shift caused entirely by companies training models on their content without permission. AI companies are externalizing their massive training costs onto independent web operators, effectively taxing the independent web to build their proprietary models. 📉
Anyone with open commissions who wants to do some #art for NetBSD?
We've got a budget for paying for some concept art and can later talk about working with you on some merch. DM us!
Naturally, we cannot accept contributions using generative AI.
Just in case you haven't seen the best social media post ever, have this from Coldstuff Ice Cream who are in Blackstone, Massachusetts.
I had a coworker make a joke about how my constant need to bring up accessibility is annoying.
Anna a couple of years ago probably would have been depressed about that.
Anna today went “yeah I guess I could be less annoying…buttttt I’m not gonna be ✨”
"Humans write bad code, too!" exclaim AI boosters who don't perhaps understand that's not an argument in favour of AI-generated code.
Sure. If you're gonna push bad code, at least make sure nobody read it first.

So RIP Deno… They are stopping work on the runtime over the next 12 months.
I was hoping that we could some day have a Node.js alternative with a more modern interface/tooling, but with this and Bun now being part of Anthropic and vibe-(re)coded to the extreme, it does not seem it will happen.
… and I was quite right to be doubtful of the longevity of those 2 at the start, they both raised money and I could not see how they could continue to exists long-term and keep their investors happy.
I recently was asked by Kinokuniya to paint a very special picture for them - the front of their flagship store in Shinjyuku, Tokyo for the 100th anniversary! The commemorative website is already open here: https://100th.kinokuniya.co.jp/
trying to get this score as low as possible
well, since it seems like it's been a month or so...
hiii hiii (boost if you would not mind); I was @aud, but for a variety of reasons the move had issues and so I've lost quite a few mutuals! So if we were mutuals and you're seeing this and you're still interested in *being* mutuals, please check and add me!
Likewise, if you feel this is a good time to say goodbye to the good ship Audrey (why am I a boat), well, that's your decision and I understand (I am not always *pleasant* or hinged on here).
Anyway, boosts appreciated! I figure it's been a month and I can't re-trigger the move on my prior server so sending out a second notice is probably the best I can do.
Thank you!
Book mail! It’s my contributor copy for Best American Science Fiction and Fantasy 2026.

Any Linux users bold enough to help with manual testing of a PR onto Arcalibre, starting from source?
There's a **completely optional** Nix shell config to get dependencies, but otherwise the build assumes that you have access to PDM or uv, as well as a few native libraries (more than I would like, that's something I'm working on).
It's all automated with do-runner², but that's again optional.

@cthos It's just so absurd to *simultaneously* think that it's legal to use AI to bypass someone else's license *and* that your own OSS licenses mean anything.
if you want users to apply security updates maybe don't ship them with updates that fuck with their quiet enjoyment of their computers.
I should rerun my homelab eval and see what the "is now slopping" ratio is.
(some things I have just pinned at a version foreeeever)
My stack is becoming this interesting (read: sad) jenga tower of projects that do not accept slop that have upstreams which do (Asahi -> Fedora -> Linux kernel) and I am mitigating what I can by carefully managing what deps I accept but gods the landscape is filled with "just a little slop we promise"
Cosmic DE and both Niri+Noctalia work pretty well on Asahi, turns out
As I warned about months ago now, I can confirm that Google Chrome's #AI API is now actively being used for device fingerprinting and tracking purposes.
Out of 100 of the top global english language content sites - around 30% are actively using the API for fingerprinting, Google Advertising (profiling) or both) without the legally required consent (EU law).
BIG OL HOT TIP for folks like me using PiHole to block ads and trackers etc *and* devices on the latest iOS:
You’re gonna want to turn off “Connectivity assist” right tf now.
This feature used to be helpful when the wifi genuinely had no internet connectivity, but apparently iOS 27 uses it to *re-request DNS queries that failed because you intentionally blocked them*.
This feature bypassed my filters for **132MB** of ads and trackers while I was hunting this down 🤬🤬🤬
Time to go add ob.brilliantchap.com to pi-hole.
Hearing lots of discourse about "stochastic parrots" recently? Here's a discussion of the backstory, both of the phrase itself and what's going on now.
