This is the sort of embarrassing nonsense that we used to try (and sometimes succeed) to convince OEMs and silicon vendors *not* to do back when I worked on Android. It's sad to see Google just continuing to descend into utter crapitude.

One thing about every time bsky shits itself and I have to login again is that I'm reminded once again that they've managed to fuck up their login page so that it's incompatible with Firefox's password management, something that feel like it takes a special brand of incompetence to pull off.

If you believe that "ai" makes you 10x (or 50x!) more productive, what this tells me is that you are utterly useless and I'd be better served hiring or working with just about anyone else (though ideally someone with critical thinking skills and an interest in actually learning things).

Enjoying the scenic vistas, pictorial story-telling, mysterious artifacts, and buying thermal detonators from bird-person NPC vendors.

I did end up restarting in "Newcomer" mode, which is (thankfully) a little less punishing, but in subtle ways... mostly I have one more hit point and I thiiink healing kits are slightly more common. Some big-pile-of-enemies battles feel slightly easier but it's hard to put my finger on exactly why.

It is the year of Linux on the Television (if you're sufficiently lucky with the waiting list). So far the GabeCube, er, Steam Machine, has been a pretty painless and enjoyable experience.

Okay, I dump on bsky a fair bit... I mean no edit feature (still), it tends to really mangle images when recompressing them, it has an obnoxiously low character limit, it's not *actually* federated in any meaningful way, etc, etc... but today I uploaded a video and they now let you upload soft subtitles (vtt format), which is an awesome feature that I wish Mastodon/Fedi (and other platforms that let you share video) would adopt!

Why is it always ignorance-worshipping death cults?

Glanced at LinkedIn tonight (always a mistake) and saw a post from some asshole I've never heard of quoting some other asshole I've never heard of (and citing him as some industry luminary) saying that the only way to maximize productivity in the new "AI" coding world is *never* reading the code.

It is kind of mind-blowing to watch the bulk of the software industry just 100% commit to destroying their ability to write and maintain software. These people are fucking insane.

This was extremely enjoyable. It's a "database diver", similar to TR-49 or Her Story in that you're chasing breadcrumbs through a space designed to not be trivially searchable or brute-forced and using what you learn to piece together what's going on. Some fun twists as you unravel things. I'd advise avoiding spoilers for the best experience.

I'm enjoying unraveling what's going on in The Incident at Galley House and appreciate that the game gives you a bunch of in-game tools to keep track of your theories / threads you're chasing -- the ability to highlight transcript lines, clip them into your notebook, tag the timeline with icons, just write out notes (including timeline IDs that hyperlink back to those scenes), etc. Very thoughtful.

Anyone out there use bubblewrap to sandbox mediainfo/ffmpeg/imagemagick (for content identification and thumbnail generation)?

It looks like they only use ~30 common syscalls between them and a very restricted seccomp-bpf filter, no ipc/network access, and minimal fs access (ro bins/libs, hopefully next-to-no dev/proc/sys) should be doable.

What are modern best practices for linking between DOM elements and JS objects?

I've seen (generally older) chatter about potential memory leaks, but not sure how much of that is a real concern beyond avoiding loops.

Data attributes are obviously useful and a "safe" namespace, but can only store strings.

Are there specific properties or property name patterns that are safe for use (won't collide with future builtins) for references to JS objects?

Anyone have favorite resources for modern vanilla (no piles of libraries, middleware, etc) Javascript / HTML / CSS techniques? Nice solid overviews, references, or cookbooks a plus. CSS, in particular, I've never fully wrapped my head around all the flexbox, grid, etc layout stuff.

I'm, against my better judgement, doing a bit of web app development, and actually having fun, but Search is Crap nowadays and pointers to modern resources would be handy.
