Kid the Younger lobbies hard for some special edition of their favorite *Therezinosaurus* toy, for their birthday. Same size & not made of gold so far as I know, just “special” somehow that once the kid sees it, they won’t be able to stop explaining to us how it’s so special, but we won’t be able to see it.
My wife orders it, cuz why shouldn’t our kid have things they’re really excited about for their birthday?
Anyway, a box comes, while wife is away from the house. KtY get out their current *Therezinosaurus* toy, lays it carefully across the top of the box. Determines that this box definitely holds their new, somehow more special (but who must of course remain deferential to the original) *Therezinosaurus*. But we won’t open the box and find out until my wife is home.
Suddenly, my dad joke-addled brain becomes as excited as KtY about the contents of the box, but not because I care about the answer to the question. No, I care about *crafting* the question:
I get out my phone & take a picture of the *Therezinosaurus* toy lain carefully across the box, texting said picture to my wife with the question, “Therein, is a saurus?”

By now, if you're on Arch, CachyOS, EndeavourOS, SteamOS, or any of the other Arch-based derivatives, you have likely heard that the AUR (the Arch User Repository, for those who were not aware and just want to learn) is under attack, with orphaned PKGBUILDs being taken over by nefarious folks who want to inject data-stealers into the way such packages get built for users.

To deal with this, first remember that Arch's official repositories (core, extra, multilib, etc.) are fully maintained by the Arch team, and are not the focus of this particular attack. Next, if you *must* use packages compiled via PKGBUILDs from the AUR, you can at least try to assess your safety with some of the advice included in this (and similar; please do your own research): https://discuss.cachyos.org/t/aur-compromised-almost-2000-packages-affected-20260611/31040
Personally, I found myself switching several packages over from the AUR to Flathub and/or their native git repositories (from which I need to manually monitor for updates).
Also, I recently converted over from a completely Arch base to using CachyOS repositories & kernels on my gaming rig. I honestly don't remember how much detail on that process I went into here, and I'm not going to rehash the process in this post. But I mention it, because that's what I've now decided to do on my laptop too, due to the fact that CachyOS fully builds and maintains on their own repositories, some of the packages I was relying on the AUR for, under Arch. One big example is `librewolf-bin`. On the CachyOS repository, it is not *always* as up-to-date as the AUR or Flathub would have been, but at most a business day or two back. I should also point out that this package is not one of the official methods to install as recommended on librewolf.net, but then their current advice recommends `yay -S librewolf` or `yay -S librewolf-bin` for Arch-based distros, both of which use (surprise, surprise; a helper for) the AUR. So they need to update that recommendation when they get a chance, just as does the whole portion of the Linux ecosystem that uses Arch & its derivatives. To be clear, they also show how to get the latest version of Librewolf from flatpak, in the librewolf.net documentation.
Anyway, speaking of AUR helpers, it felt weird but necessary, once I had cleared off literally *every* AUR-installed package from my system (either by substituting others for the same function, installing from other sources as listed above, or deciding that *that* particular package was simply not important enough to keep running on my system), it felt really weird to delete my AUR helper of choice completely from the system.
But in these times, and until we know authoritatively that the AUR is safe from the current threat, I recommend doing exactly that, because even having an AUR helper on the system makes it too easy (through tired muscle memory, even) to use said helper, to install something you really do not want. Just get rid of the temptation, by getting rid of the command. Once safe, maybe you can reinstall it. Or maybe a completely new, hopefully safer, way will emerge to install the wide swath of packages we'd like to add to Arch and its derivatives.
