I don't remember where I learned it, but the trick of using a rubber band to get a better grip for opening a jar has been really useful. Works better than the rubber pads that get sold for that purpose

Makes me fondly remember the odd drinks of my childhood. Yoo-Hoo, which might be mistaken for chocolate milk, but is really chocolate whey. Malta Goya, a close cousin of kvass, if you know that stuff. Manhattan Special, carbonated sweet black coffee, brewed on Manhattan Ave in Brooklyn. Artificial fruit drink in plastic barrels with a foil lid. Cheapest drink in the corner store

I remember learning of "midden piles" as a kid and recognizing it as a larger scale version of "sweeping out the kitchen into that bush behind the back door." Small bits of food, broken glass, dust, hair, etc, all ended up in that shrub growing next to the stairs that led into the the kitchen.

Well they were not kidding about "flooring: none." Looks like someone was trying to add a basement to a building previously lacking one

Reading today that Pat Oliphant died. This cartoon from 2007 got a lot of criticism when it was new.

I had a dream I was going out to get food and drinks for coworkers. It seemed like a midwest US place. The place had a beer machine like a soda fountain. I was getting five of one watery beer, one of a different watery beer, and one Budweiser with cheese.

Next to the beer fountain was a machine that dispensed slices of American "cheese" to put on top of your cup of beer, almost like a lid. I wondered if the intent was that you stick a straw through the cheese to drink.

This is the mind–body dualism sometimes called the "ghost in the machine." Here the "pilot" is the "ghost" and "body" is "machine."

This is very striking imagery to me, but I am not sure I like being a ghost instead of a whole person, "seen" through a digital "keyhole"

About eight to twelve years ago I read an article, probably online but possibly Ina magazine, about resurgence of small scale hydroelectric along streams in the mountainous areas on the northeast United States.

Does anyone else remember that? Or know newer articles about it?

Asked to make it public, instead the owners installed a mosaic reading:

Well, she certainly exhibits a lot of different skills and artistry here to make a 18th century cabinetry inspired marquetry and fiberglass corset. I am impressed with the skills.
