New transmission, substations, gas generation, water infrastructure, utility upgrades, tax abatements, and public incentives can all become part of the project without appearing on the operator’s balance sheet.

Those costs do not disappear. They move.

Utility customers absorb grid upgrades. Communities absorb noise and pollution. Municipalities absorb infrastructure demands. Watersheds absorb new consumption. Governments absorb financial risk if projected demand never arrives. None of which is guaranteed.

That is why local opposition should not be dismissed as anti-technology hysteria. Much of it is ordinary politics: who gets the benefit, who carries the cost, and who gets to decide whether the project is worth it.

A new building becomes proof of progress. A budget cut becomes a necessary sacrifice. A critic becomes an obstacle to history. A warning becomes disloyalty. Harm becomes the price of transformation.

The future does not need to be real. It only needs to be vivid enough to organize behavior.

Then belief begins producing evidence of itself. Money moves. Laws change. Institutions, monuments, reports, slogans, and dashboards appear. Later, those artifacts are cited as proof that the promised future was always on its way.

But the destination did not predict the path. Belief in the destination helped build it.

This is not always dangerous. A city that imagines a greener, cooler, more walkable future may discover neglected possibilities in the present: trees, transit, shade, public space. Here, the future expands choice. It helps people see what could be done.

The danger begins when a possible future becomes the only acceptable one.

Then every fact is forced to serve it.

A movement convinced that collapse is coming treats every crisis as confirmation. A government obsessed with security sees disagreement as threat. A company certain that automation is inevitable treats workers as temporary obstacles. A group expecting purification or redemption begins to treat suffering as necessary.

Soon the story cannot be disproved. Success proves it. Failure proves it. Resistance proves it. The more damage it causes, the more urgently it claims to be needed.

At that point, the future is no longer helping people think. It is telling them what they are allowed to see.

This is why inevitability is such a powerful political weapon. A policy is rarely presented as one choice among several. It is called modernization, survival, progress, restoration, or the next stage of history. Alternatives are removed before the debate begins.

Once a destination is declared inevitable, opposition becomes ignorance, nostalgia, or sabotage. The question is no longer whether the destination is desirable. It is whether you will help history arrive or stand in its way.

This control does not always feel like coercion. People begin policing their own perception. They search for confirming signs. They reinterpret losses as investments. They defend actions they would otherwise reject because those actions have been placed inside a larger promise.

The promise gives sacrifice meaning. Sacrifice creates commitment. Commitment makes doubt painful.

Eventually, abandoning the promised future would mean admitting that the sacrifices may have been unnecessary. It often feels easier to sacrifice more.

A healthy society must tolerate facts that do not fit its preferred story. It must preserve disagreement, alternatives, and the ability to change direction. It must distinguish a plan from a prophecy and a possibility from a destiny.

Keeping alternatives alive is not indecision. It is resilience.

When only one future remains imaginable, every crisis becomes a reason to accelerate toward it. When several remain visible, failure can still lead to revision rather than fanaticism.

Many futures are possible in the present. The urgent questions are simpler: Which one are we funding? Which one are we calling inevitable? Which one are our institutions already built to produce? Which alternatives are being mocked, starved, or closed off before they can be tested?

The future does not need to reach backward through time to control us.

It only needs to become convincing enough that we build the world it predicts; and later mistake what we built for proof that it was always coming.

I think something in my brain has gone so long without enough dopamine that I’ve become accustomed to a state of perpetual unflappability.

I know things matter, but they don’t automatically feel meaningful in the way I assume they do for other people. I can assign value to things intellectually, but I don’t experience whatever it is people are supposed to feel when they win; or even when they lose. It all feels like more of the same: a self-perpetuating waveform moving through gradients of suffering and relative comfort.

Part of me feels that trying to optimize for either extreme would only make the downward descent more painful. Why become too attached to the mountaintop when I know I’ll eventually return to the valley? And why despair in the valley when I know it will inevitably lead upward again?

Maybe that’s the problem. Everything feels temporary enough that nothing feels fully real.

Children interact with a video game.

The franchise began with children being controlled through television. Then it moved to biological engineering. Then immersive video games. Then the theft of time. Finally, it reached total digital control.

This is not a collection of sequels.

Each movie tracks the evolution of the control system:

Here is what the entire franchise is saying:

The debt-intensive AI expansion is approaching failure within an already overextended social and physical system, and its failure is highly likely to produce society-wide consequences. What cannot yet be known is whether those consequences arrive as a recognizable crash or as an accelerating sequence of emergencies whose costs are repeatedly transferred to the public.

We are all on our own. Either as a community, or as an individual, it’s your choice. But no one is coming to save us from this. No one is going to fix this, but us.

The decisive test of utility for any LLM is not whether the model can produce an impressive analytical artifact. It is whether the artifact reduces the total cost of reaching a warranted commitment:

generation cost+verification cost+cost of hidden error<cost of doing the analysis directly.

When verification requires reconstructing the original work (and the artifact does not expose provenance, alternatives, exclusions, or uncertainty) the supposed transformation has not reduced analytical labor. It has relocated and obscured it.

It’s kind of ironic that the story of the Tower of Babel begins with everyone understanding one another and supposedly ends in catastrophe... After which no one can understand anyone else.

AI feels like the same story told in reverse. We all speak different languages, and it helps bridge the gap, making translation easier; not perfect, but easier. Yet at the same time, language is being compressed, standardized, and smoothed into the most predictable version of itself.

So perhaps we end up speaking the same language again, only no one truly understands the words, because they’ve been stripped of ambiguity, history, and lived meaning. Everything is legible, but nothing is intimate. We have overcome the confusion of Babel only to recreate its catastrophe in another form: not a world in which nobody can communicate, but one in which everyone can... And yet nothing genuinely new can be said.

The end of the world will come with a ToS.

The danger is not merely that generative systems sometimes produce incorrect documents. It is that they are optimized to convert ambiguity into usable-looking completion, while the surrounding organization often treats document completion as evidence that task-state reconciliation has occurred.

They may remain as lines across the skin and heart, marks of what happened and what was lost. But a scar is not an open wound forever. Memory does not have to become persecution. The past can be carried without being obeyed. I can hold what happened without letting it choose everything that happens next.

I cannot take back every word. I cannot return every gift I squandered or recover every day I wasted. I cannot make myself innocent by finding someone else to blame. I can acknowledge what I have done. I can make amends where amends are possible. I can stop tearing at the people who try to help me. I can speak with a human voice instead of hiding behind reasons. I can give without demanding that the gift save me. I can care without holding another person accountable for the whole emptiness inside me.

This is not absolution. I am tired of absolution that asks nothing and changes nothing. Forgiveness without accountability becomes another disguise. To forgive myself is not to declare that I was right. It is to refuse the easy fate of repeating what I have already condemned. It is to accept that I was wrong and still capable of becoming different. It is to stop using shame as proof that change is impossible.

I may fail. I may choose badly. I may wake tomorrow and hear the same old voice saying that nothing matters, that love is foolish, that hope is a lie and life is already lost. I may feel the walls close again. When that happens, I will not call the feeling truth merely because it hurts. I will not make pain my master destiny. I will remember that contradiction is not defeat. I can feel empty and still choose to give. I can be afraid and still move. I can doubt love and still act with care. I can hate the world for a moment without making hatred the whole world.

The inner light is not a grand and permanent flame. Sometimes it is only a faint whisper that says look again. Sometimes it is the smallest refusal to turn away. Sometimes it is one hand opening after years held tight. Sometimes it is the strength to say I do not know. Sometimes it is the courage to say I need you. Sometimes it is the choice to live one more day without requiring that the day explain itself.

So I will not wait for the future to make me worthy. I will not wait for the universe to smile upon me. I will not demand a hundred years before I value one sensation, one sunrise, one person looking back. I will take the pain that belongs to living and refuse the pain created only by hiding. I will release what I cannot control and recognize the beast that tells me control is the same as safety. I will not subjugate or obliterate every desire merely because desire can wound me. I will let love remain dangerous. I will let hope remain uncertain.

Nothing lasts forever. That is not the same as saying nothing matters. Everything changes. That is not the same as saying nothing is real. I do not know the final meaning of life, but I know that lives can be hurt, that words can wound, that hands can heal, that choices alter what comes next. I know a world is made from such differences. I know that what I give enters someone else, and what they give enters me. Perhaps meaning is no more mysterious than this: what happens between us matters because we are here to feel its effects.

Today is a new day. The past remains, but it does not fill the entirety of the void. The sky offers no answer, yet the sunrise comes. I look around at people, at the foolish and the proud, the frightened and the hungry, the loving and the lost, and I recognize myself among them. I will not call that recognition disgrace. I will not look away.

I will speak. I will listen. I will learn. I will choose. I will care, though care has a cost. I will love, though love can be lost. I will make mistakes and make amends. I will hold hope without demanding a promise. I will live without knowing everything.

Today is a new day, and this time I will begin.

What you are looking at is an experimental reconstruction made by combining four works by Gregory Bateson: “The Cybernetics of ‘Self’: A Theory of Alcoholism,” “A Theory of Play and Fantasy,” “Form, Substance, and Difference,” and "Steps to an Ecology of Mind."

I mechanically broke the works into overlapping fragments, destroyed their original linear order, and preserved only local repetition and semantic adjacency. I then asked the text to reassemble into a single coherent discourse using those internal constraints alone. The result is not a summary or quotation of any one work, but a newly generated path through their shared conceptual network—mind, difference, communication, feedback, alcoholism, ecology, and the limits of unilateral control.

A future becomes powerful when it is seen early enough. If it is seen as one possible continuation among many, it can guide responsible action. If it is seen as destiny, it becomes an optimizer. It starts asking the present to justify it. It demands precursors, signs, sacrifices, and enemies. It makes people mistake compliance for truth. It makes the path feel clean after the pruning has already happened.

So the question is not whether the future is contained in the present. Many futures are contained in the present. The question is which one is being made legible, which one is being given infrastructure, which one is being protected from disconfirmation, and which ones are silently disappearing. The future does not have to reach backward through time to change us. It only has to become coherent enough that we begin to build its past for it
